Do as I Say-Not As I Do

How I accidentally found myself dehydrated from an unexpected situation!

I just have to share this with you as a follow up to my previous post regarding becoming dehydrated-it happened to me and I didn't even recognize it :/

Yesterday my husband and I headed out on our Harley Davidson for a short tour of some of Indiana's beautiful covered bridges. if ya'll remember it was about 90 degrees at 11 am when we finally got on the road. it has taken me a few years of riding (I don't drive-just ride so I can zone out- kinda "people watching in fast motion"! ) anyway....after a few years of riding, witnessing the results of road rash, I have given into wearing boots and jeans-yes...even when its crazy hot :) Not sure what I was thinking when I put on the black t-shirt... Probably that it looked good and I wanted to wear it- HaHa-fashion first :)

We headed south surrounded by the Midwest's finest farm fields and (blistering) sunshine-for many hours-about 7 with a few stops. We stopped for lunch, and not even thinking "hydrate" I drank 2 big glasses of iced tea. Sidebar... I love riding, but not so much on hot highways with limited scenery. So sometimes I plug into my iPod for added entertainment-except this time my left ear bud wasn't working, which was a bit of a good thing because while I was trying to fix it I was distracted from the fact that I was sweating my butt off! And yes, all of this at 65mph :)

At some point I started feeling miserably hot. (oh, did I mention my "more than occasional" hot flashes?? Can you say "HOT MESS"?) We were saved by a remote DQ where I drank a diet coke-not thinking hydration, I consumed another caffeinated drink-not smart!

It was all downhill from there... I was becoming a puddle of sweat and still never thought I might becoming dehydrated! The next stop felt a bit "spacey", usually no cause for alarm :) but when I set my sunglasses down and couldn't find them (we're on a bike for goodness sake!) my husband said I was really out of it. We should have known I was sick when I didn't talk back! haha!

When I realized that I hadn't urinated in about 6 hours, (read the previous post!) I was like "duh" we should have guzzled Gatorade and lots of water- I hadn't even thought of it-I was doing nothing strenuous-FYI-we did stop and buy me some ear buds...like a child I tend to fidget when I'm bored ;) I had ignored the shortness of breath and chest pressure cuz I've had those for 7 months :/ I found myself in a zombie kind of state and just felt crappy, which lasted for hours! So, as I said before, drink up BEFORE you feel thirsty or dizzy!
