What's the Buzz on the Senior Spelling Bee?

State Rep. Kay Hatcher is gearing up for annual Senior Spelling Bee, this year hosted in Oswego.

The following is from a press release issued by Representative Kay Hatcher:  The buzz has begun about this spring’s Senior Spelling Bee, hosted by State Representative Kay Hatcher. This year’s Bee will on Friday, April 26 at the Oswego Senior Center. “Each year I host an event so mature adults in our area can show off their ‘spelling smarts’ and each year it gets more competitive and more fun,” said Hatcher. “We move the event throughout the district. Two years ago we were in Yorkville and last year we were in Sugar Grove. Letter to the Editor: Bob Wyngard Explains Oswego Township Senior Service Referendum

Tax-rate increase will appear on April 5 ballot.

To meet the low level of need for senior support in Kendall County in the past (1998) the County put a Senior Tax Referendum Levy question on the ballot and it passed. In the early years, there were only 5 to 7 senior assistance and services organizations in the entire County and their collective need for funding ranged annually around $200,000. The number of applicants for funding (now 10 or 11) and the need for help has increased in recent years and for the period July 2010 to June 2011 the amount awarded was approximately $330,000, although the amount requested was higher. Senior Services Tax Levy Referendum Will Be Put to a Vote April 5

Registered voters in attendance at a special Oswego Township Board meeting voted 53-29 to put the special levy on the ballot.

When it comes to whether taxpayers of Oswego Township will pay more in taxes to help fund senior services, voters will have the final say. A special meeting of the Township Board was called Tuesday night to determine whether a special tax levy would be placed on the April 5 ballot, and in compliance with law, a vote was taken of the registered voters in attendance. After the measure passed by a margin of 53-29, the question will appear on the ballot in less than three months. If the referendum is approved in April, the tax levy will have the owner of a $200,000 home paying an additional $14 a year in taxes. The tax levy will collect about $300,000 annually. The Oswego Senior Center, which is hoping to receive up to $160,000 of that money …
