Teen Driver in Tuesday Night Crash in Montgomery Dies

Officials at the DuPage County Coroner's Office confirmed that Jennifer VanEtten, 16, of Big Rock, died at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials in the DuPage County Coroner’s Office have confirmed that Jennifer VanEtten, the 16-year-old driver of the minivan in Tuesday night’s crash in Montgomery, died Wednesday afternoon. Vanetten died at 12:30 p.m. at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, officials said. A cause of death has not yet been determined, according to the coroner’s office, and the investigation is ongoing. The Montgomery Police Department confirmed her death Thursday morning. Police released information Wednesday afternoon that Vanetten was in critical condition at the hospital. Victims Remembered at Mutual Ground Candlelight Vigil

Dozens joined Mutual Ground's staff at the Montgomery Police Department on Wednesday to hear the story of one domestic violence survivor, and mourn those who did not escape the cycle of abuse.

Linda Almas of Yorkville spent 13 years in an abusive marriage. Her husband, she said, would fly into fits of rage that ended with bruises and black eyes. He would belittle her, and laugh at the things she held dear. Disputes that could have been solved peacefully, she said, often ended with bruises up and down her arms, as he grabbed her and shook her. “Any attempt at a serious discussion would end with his hands over my face and mouth, telling me to shut up,” Almas said. “He would tell me he was helping me, and this was all for my own good.” Though it took years, Almas finally broke the cycle of abuse, with the help of Mutual Ground, the domestic violence shelter based in Aurora. Unfortunately, I found out about this event late in the evening but my 11 yr old daughter and I both attended. Linda's story was so touching, she is an amazing woman. I only wished that there were other young teen girls and boys there who could have learned from Linda's story. We need to teach our children that domestic violence is wrong.   more ›
