The riverfront property Robert Mitchler tended for more six decades might provide the best testament to the life he lived. The former state senator, 91, died Thursday, but the large, iconic American flag still flapped in the wind outside his home Friday afternoon. He lived along the Fox River, off Route 34 between Yorkville and Oswego, with his wife, Helen. “The time he could spend by himself, or with (his sons), or with Mom working on the property were the best memories he had,” his son, Kurt Mitchler, said. The veteran who enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941, fighting in both World War II and the Korean War, had the American flag flying in front of the home 24 hours a day.
