The riverfront property Robert Mitchler tended for more six decades might provide the best testament to the life he lived. The former state senator, 91, died Thursday, but the large, iconic American flag still flapped in the wind outside his home Friday afternoon. He lived along the Fox River, off Route 34 between Yorkville and Oswego, with his wife, Helen. “The time he could spend by himself, or with (his sons), or with Mom working on the property were the best memories he had,” his son, Kurt Mitchler, said. The veteran who enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941, fighting in both World War II and the Korean War, had the American flag flying in front of the home 24 hours a day. "uncle bob" was one of the most interesting man you can ever meet there was something about him when he entered a room you can hear his booming voice. you could not help to smile and laugh with him. when he started speaking there was no stopping him he could speak for hours on end but personally I could sit that and listen and learn so much knowledge that you cant get anywhere else. he loved his …   more ›
