Yorkville Middle School eighth-grader Alvin Nguyen won the school’s National Geographic Bee – and the honor of taking a test Friday to determine if he will compete against 99 other students in the state bee. For the school bee’s final round, the six competitors filed into the school’s library this morning and answered questions crafted by National Geographic pertaining to major waterways, prominent cities and geographic wonders. About 15 classmates sat in the audience and cheered when one of the finalists got the correct answer. Seventh-grade history students gasped when teacher Shannon Kerley told them Friday that the National Geographic Bee winner will receive a $25,000 scholarship. Of course, those students were a long way from the national finals – sponsored by the prolific magazine - in May. They competed in preliminary rounds in their history classes last week. This week, the field of 36 contestants will be narrowed to six for Yorkville Middle School’s finals Thursday morning.
