Where does a person begin to thank people that are so dedicated and involved in a cause? During the past couple of months there has been trying times in my personal and family life. It also was a busy time politically, during my campaign for Kendall County Coroner. I would like to thank all of the people who helped during my campaign for coroner. Whether it was wishing me well, offering advice, walking door to door, making a donation, distributing flyers, help with yard signs, making phone calls, or just asking me and my wife if we were doing okay. There are truly some great people in Kendall County who care what happens here and who care about the quality of life here. The experience of going door to door and speaking with the …

Todd Milliron, who supports Coroner Ken Toftoy's opponent in the November election, questions why the pay changes weren't presented to the County Board.
Kendall County Coroner Ken Toftoy did not consult county board members when he changed his deputies' pay to an hourly rate - nor was that required by state law, Toftoy said. Patch blogger Todd Milliron, who supports Toftoy's opponent in the November election, has asserted that the deputy coroner's pay should be set by the Kendall County Board. Toftoy, a longtime incumbent and chairman of the Kendall County Republican Central Committee, is facing independent Mike Dabney, an Oswego firefighter. An attorney in the Kendall County State's Attorney's Office told Toftoy he needed to change his pay policies to comply with IRS regulations, Toftoy said. Toftoy had been paying deputy coroners $24 a day when they were "on call," plus a $100 stipend …

Check out the candidate questionnaires from Republican Ken Toftoy and Independent Mike Dabney.
The Kendall County coroner race is pitting a long-time incumbent (and chairman of the Kendall County Republican Central Committee) against a relative political newcomer. It's not the first time they've squared off, though. Mike Dabney, of Oswego, ran against incumbent Ken Toftoy, of Yorkville, in the 2008 Republican primary for coroner. Dabney got 3,157 votes to Toftoy's 6,561, which means Toftoy got 67.5 percent of the votes, according to the Kendall County Clerk's website. For some perspective, the county had 58,570 registered voters in February 2008, with only 9,718, or about 16.6 percent, participating in the Republican primary for coroner, according to the county clerk. No Democrats filed for the primary race in 2008. This time around…

It is unfortunate that the Kendall County coroner’s meals and travel expenses during staff training are now the subject of an editorial in the local Kendall County Record/Oswego Ledger Sentinel newspapers. Based upon my experience as a former Kendall County deputy coroner and other experiences I have had with expendable budgets, I know that it is possible to run the coroner’s office effectively without the use of county credit cards. That is why I can guarantee I will not have any county credit cards issued for staff or myself. If the coroner’s office is managed properly, a county credit card will not be needed. I will be the sole person responsible for my elected office’s expenses. In addition, Kendall County taxpayers should not be …

Now that I am on the ballot, (fantastic!!) I am looking forward to having fun with my campaign. I am very excited about running and having a chance at being elected Coroner of Kendall Co. It was some work getting the signatures, especially considering I had to obtain over 10 times the signatures my opponent had to obtain. I believe this shows the commitment I have to becoming the Coroner of Kendall Co. However, it is was great going door to door, meeting people, and meeting people at different events. I met a lot of really good people. I heard a lot about issues that concerned people and I heard a lot of good ideas. I am looking forward to bringing these ideas and issues out during my campaign. I would like to thank everyone who signed my …

Oswego firefighter Mike Dabney is going to keep collecting signatures until Monday's filing deadline in hopes of having more than enough to run against long-time Republican coroner Ken Toftoy.
The Oswego firefighter running against long-time Kendall County Coroner Ken Toftoy has received enough signatures a week before the deadline to file his nominating petition as an independent. Mike Dabney, of Oswego, had 2,049 signatures Monday morning, while his campaign workers estimated he needed between 1,518 and 2,428 to get his name on the ballot as a political independent, according to a news release Dabney issued Monday evening. The number of signatures on his nominating petition needs to be equal to at least 5 percent of the people who voted in the last general election, Dabney said. “The 2,049 number puts me comfortably above the minimum needed,” Dabney said in the news release. “I am very grateful to everyone who signed my …

Mike Dabney is circulating petitions to run as an independent.
Editor's note: This was updated Wednesday evening with comments from Toftoy. A 52-year-old Oswego firefighter and former deputy coroner is running against Coroner Ken Toftoy as an independent. Mike Dabney, of Oswego, is circulating petitions to run again after an unsuccessful bid against Toftoy in the 2008 Republican primary. Toftoy, who also is chairman of the Kendall County Republican Central Committee, has served as coroner since 1992, according to his profile on the county’s website. Dabney said he decided to run as an independent shortly after the 2008 race to give more voters more options on the ballot. “There were a lot of people who came up to me and said, ‘I would have voted for you, but you ran as a Republican,’” Dabney said. He …
