Both Ward 4 candidates Rose Spears and Marty Michalisko said they didn't know who placed the signs targeting Spears.
Ward 4 Alderman candidate Rose Spears spotted about two dozen spray-painted signs advocating against her in Yorkville on Saturday morning. Many were removed by Saturday afternoon, but Spears was concerned after at least one property owner indicated they did not give anyone permission to place such a sign on the property. Yorkville Police Chief Richard Hart said police took an informational report from Spears but likely would do no follow up investigation. “Political signs are free speech, but like anything else, you have to have permission to go on other people’s property,” Hart said. Both Spears and her opponent, Marty Michalisko, said they didn’t know who had created or put up the signs. Michalisko had been on vacation through late …

Yorkville Patch asked all the candidates in contested city races the same four questions. Here are Marty Michalisko's answers in the race for Ward 4 alderman.
With election season in full swing, Yorkville Patch wanted to give readers a clear view of how local candidates compared on recent issues that surfaced before the City Council. Below are the answers from Marty Michalisko, who is running against incumbent Rose Spears in Ward 4. Spears' answers can be found here. Links to all of Yorkville Patch's candidate profiles and questionnaires can be found here. • Would you vote to place a binding bike trails referendum on the April 5 ballot? Why? My professional experience tells me that the city will never come close to a deal like this again. The state is funding 80 percent of the project as long as the city pays for the remaining 20 percent. This is a one time deal and will not be offered again…

Mayoral challenger Gary Golinski will be listed on the April ballot before Robert Gryder and incumbent Valerie Burd.
Mayoral candidate Gary Golinski's name will appear on the April ballot first after a drawing Wednesday afternoon between him and challenger Robert Gryder. The mayoral race was among three local races involved in the lottery at City Hall. Candidates names typically appear on the ballot in the order the candidates filed the nominating petitions, but lotteries are held when multiple candidates submit petitions at the same time. Mayor Valerie Burd is seeking re-election but filed her petition after the other two candidates. In each case, two numbered slips were set in an empty coffee container and whichever candidate's number was drawn will be listed first on the ballot. In the other two races with lotteries, Christopher Funkhouser will be …

Mayoral race plus all four races for alderman are contested in the April 5 election.
There were no candidates rushing to file nominating petitions just before the deadline at 5 p.m. Monday, but four candidates have filed for city races in the past week. Since 4:30 p.m. Dec. 13, Mayor Valerie Burd filed to seek re-election, creating a three-way race among her, Alderman Gary Golinski (Ward 2), and Republican Precinct Committeeman Robert Gryder, according to a list of nominating petitions from Deputy City Clerk Lisa Pickering. Attorney Carlo Colosimo, who had considered running for mayor, filed nominating petitions to run against former City Treasurer Robert Allen for Ward 1 alderman. City Clerk Jacquelyn Milschewski filed a petition to run against Mac Hinman and incumbent Arden Joe Plocher for Ward 2 alderman. Treasurer …

At least four city races will be contested, based on the candidate petitions that had been filed at City Hall on the first day of the filing period.
Incumbents will face challengers in at least four city races in the April 5 election, based on the ten candidates who filed petitions at Yorkville City Hall Monday. Challengers Robert Gryder and Gary Golinski filed petitions to run for mayor, Deputy City Clerk Lisa Pickering said. Mayor Valerie Burd and attorney Carlo Colosimo both also have announced they will run for mayor but did not file the necessary paperwork Monday. Monday was the first day of the candidate filing period, which ends at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20. In City Council races, Mac Hinman is running against Ward 2 incumbent Arden Joe Plocher. Hey Mark, Sorry it took so long for me to reply. Busy day. I wouldn't put it past anyone to have democratic or republican signs from past elections. I don't think it is a stretch. Rose was a target, no doubt, but I really don't feel it is either party affiliation. But it is a Rovian tactic, for sure. Who ever did this is chuckling to themselves, whether it be someone who is after Rose, or wants …   more ›
