County fails to follow procedure before purchasing new SUV.
A procedural error prevented Kendall County officials from purchasing a new vehicle for the Kendall County Coroner's office, the Aurora Beacon News reported. The vehicle in question, a sport utility vehicle equipped with an additional $3,000 - $4,000 in new equipment, would cost the county a base price of approximately $37,000. However, because the cost was above $30,000 the county needed to solicit bids for the vehicle -- something they failed to do. The motion was tabled until requests for proposals can be sent out, the Aurora Beacon News said. The coroner currently uses a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban with 124,000 miles. Coroner Ken Toftoy reported the vehicle has been having mechanical issues, including a steering problem.

Where does a person begin to thank people that are so dedicated and involved in a cause? During the past couple of months there has been trying times in my personal and family life. It also was a busy time politically, during my campaign for Kendall County Coroner. I would like to thank all of the people who helped during my campaign for coroner. Whether it was wishing me well, offering advice, walking door to door, making a donation, distributing flyers, help with yard signs, making phone calls, or just asking me and my wife if we were doing okay. There are truly some great people in Kendall County who care what happens here and who care about the quality of life here. The experience of going door to door and speaking with the …

Jurors will rule on cause of death of Joseph and Wyland Schmitt. Coroner still waiting for toxicology results.
County officials are still waiting for toxicology results from the death of a Yorkville father and son. County Coroner Ken Toftoy said he is expecting the report to be delivered soon. An inquest is scheduled for Dec. 13 to examine the facts presented by police and the autopsy and toxicology reports. The six jurors will determine if the deaths of Joseph R. Schmitt and his four-year-old son Wyland will be ruled as accidental, a suicide, a homicide or a mix of more than one. An inquest is required any time there is an unexplained death, Toftoy said. The toxicology screening was sent to a private laboratory in Pennsylvania. On Oct. 24 Yorkville police discovered the two bodies in the garage of of home in the 300 block of Bertram Drive after …

Running as an independent, Dabney challenged 20-year incumbent Ken Toftoy for the position. Incumbent Ken Toftoy and challenger Michael Dabney square of over budget, number of deputy coroners and other issues during Thursday's event.
Kendall County Coroner Ken Toftoy and his opponent Michael Dabney traded verbal jabs during a contentious candidate forum Thursday night hosted by WSPY FM. The candidates fielded questions from local journalists and audience members. The coroner’s segment of the forum, which also featured candidates for the Kendall County Board and Clerk of Court, had the most back-and-forth commentary of the night as the two men sparred over the budget of the coroner’s office and the number of part-time employees. Toftoy has served as coroner for 20 years. Dabney served as a deputy coroner in Kendall County for several years, and also serves as a paramedic in Oswego. Toftoy said he has maintained a stable budget for the office for the past two years and …

Todd Milliron, who supports Coroner Ken Toftoy's opponent in the November election, questions why the pay changes weren't presented to the County Board.
Kendall County Coroner Ken Toftoy did not consult county board members when he changed his deputies' pay to an hourly rate - nor was that required by state law, Toftoy said. Patch blogger Todd Milliron, who supports Toftoy's opponent in the November election, has asserted that the deputy coroner's pay should be set by the Kendall County Board. Toftoy, a longtime incumbent and chairman of the Kendall County Republican Central Committee, is facing independent Mike Dabney, an Oswego firefighter. An attorney in the Kendall County State's Attorney's Office told Toftoy he needed to change his pay policies to comply with IRS regulations, Toftoy said. Toftoy had been paying deputy coroners $24 a day when they were "on call," plus a $100 stipend …

Check out the candidate questionnaires from Republican Ken Toftoy and Independent Mike Dabney.
The Kendall County coroner race is pitting a long-time incumbent (and chairman of the Kendall County Republican Central Committee) against a relative political newcomer. It's not the first time they've squared off, though. Mike Dabney, of Oswego, ran against incumbent Ken Toftoy, of Yorkville, in the 2008 Republican primary for coroner. Dabney got 3,157 votes to Toftoy's 6,561, which means Toftoy got 67.5 percent of the votes, according to the Kendall County Clerk's website. For some perspective, the county had 58,570 registered voters in February 2008, with only 9,718, or about 16.6 percent, participating in the Republican primary for coroner, according to the county clerk. No Democrats filed for the primary race in 2008. This time around…
