March 2012 Primary: Kendall County Referenda Results

What did voters say about the telephone surcharge increase and eliminating the auditor's and recorder's offices?

Without further ado, here's what Kendall County voters had to say about these three questions. Shall the elected Office of Kendall County Auditor be eliminated effective Dec. 1, 2012? (A "yes" vote means the office goes.)   Shall the Office of Recorder of Kendall County be eliminated effective Dec. 1, 2012, and the functions and duties of that office contine to be performed by the Kendall County Clerk? (A "yes" vote means the office goes.)   Shall the County of Kendall impose an additional surcharge of up to $0.75 per mont per network connection to the existing $0.75 surcharge (total not to exceed $1.50 per month) which surcharge will be added to the monthly bill you receive for telephone or telecommunications charges, for the purpose of …

Here's what I don't understand - why didn't anyone question the cost figures that were put out by the county board? It was so obviously inflated to scare the voters. Why didn't any reporters question that?   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Recorder/Auditor Refenda Problem?

This letter-writer ponders how voters could consider eliminating offices that candidates are seeking.

In 1972, Cook County government ran into the same situation. The elimination of the Coroner's Office was placed on a referendum during the same election cycle as the Coroner was seeking office.  The 1970 Illinois Constitution is clear that a County Officer, such as the Recorder, Auditor, or Coroner is to be elected to a 4 year term.  Also, the Constitution stated that said offices can be eliminated by referendum.  What is not clear is that once the election cycle has begun, can the office be eliminated, as of the next swearing in of the Officer.  To alleviate the situation in 1972, the candidates for Coroner signed off that whoever wins the election would serve the full term, and the office would die in 1976.  This is what happened.  Given…

I asked Kendall County State's Attorney about the concerns in this letter, and this was his response: "While I cannot provide legal advice, we did research the issue and presented the Board with the two referendum (Recorder and Auditor) for a vote. Mr. Youhanaie brings up an interesting topic for discussion. I guess we will wait and see what happens after March 20."   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Supporting Auditor Candidate

Voters will be asked March 20 if they want to eliminate the auditor position; voting no on the question would support creating that county office.

From now, until March 20, voters will be asked to eliminate the elected County Auditor position.  The Republican Party has a top notch candidate for County Auditor.  His name is Alvin P. “Phil” Smith.  This  Salutatorian Oswego High School alumnus went to Northern Illinois University, and graduated Summa cum Laude in Accounting.  He furthered his education by graduating from the DePaul University College of Law.  Should the voters choose to keep the elected County Auditor, we could not wish for a better person as our next County Auditor.   Stephen Youhanaie, Oswego   Letters to the Editor should be e-mailed to Yorkville Patch Editor Jillian Duchnowski at jillian.duchnowski@patch.com. Please include your full name and a telephone number so …

David, Your facts are not correct, I did help Mr. Lea to run for Sheriff & that part is the only thing you got right, he was not unqualified, he had several years’ experience working in the law enforcement field and was working on his master’s degree (now completed) at the time he chose to run in June 2010, plus he owns his own home in Yorkville where he resides with his wife and child. May I add…   more ›
