YHS Boys Basketball's Tournament Play Prepares Foxes For Tough Conference

The Yorkville boys basketball team beat Sycamore, 59-49, Friday, after garnering a tournament championship.

Winning a basketball tournament can be a very joyful and satisfying experience. It can also be an opportunity for a team to grow so that it’s playing its best when the games matter most during the rugged conference season. The Yorkville boys basketball team hopes to make a deep and successful run during Plano’s 49th Annual Christmas Classic, Dec. 26-30. The Foxes picked up their first conference victory (final score: 59-49) when they hosted Sycamore on Friday. Then, they’ll look for tournament triumphs to correlate into conference success. “We just have to be more prepared and find ways to win,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “Sometimes you have to win the hard way and you always have to come out and be ready to go.” Yorkville (6-2 …

Panthers' Brilliant Backcourt Play Snaps Skid

Miles Simelton and Elliot McGaughy, both sophomore guards for Oswego, scored 25 points apiece to lead the Panthers past Yorkville 75-68 Saturday night in non-conference boys basketball action.

Miles Simelton and Elliot McGaughy played well beyond their years Saturday night in Yorkville. The Oswego sophomore guards were virtually unstoppable, scoring 25 points apiece to frame the Panthers’ 75-68 victory over the Foxes in non-conference boys basketball action. After dropping four of its last six games, Oswego improved to 9-4 with the road win. Yorkville fell to 9-6. “We desperately needed this (win),” Oswego coach Kevin Schnable said. “We struggled at York (1-3 over the holidays). We haven’t had much continuity with our starting lineup lately.” The Panthers were without the services of leading scorer Ryan West, who was on a football recruiting trip to Texas. Simelton and McGaughy more than filled in for the highly rated …

Yorkville's Upset Run Halted in OT Thriller

Rockford Christian's Brayden Teuscher goes 21-of-23 from the free throw line to stop Foxes in a semifinal matchup at Plano Christmas Classic.

On the third day of the 48th annual Plano Christmas Classic, Yorkville's boys basketball team was grounded--but not without more excitement. The Foxes entered the tournament unseeded and, according to most of the players on their own roster, weren't expected to make much noise. But after an upset of No. 5 seed Morris and an upset of No. 4 seed Forreston, the Foxes were ready to crack up the volume once again. And, that they did, until they finally faltered against top seed Rockford Christian. The Royal Lions defeated Yorkville 63-56 in an overtime thriller on Wednesday night. Senior Brayden Teuscher, who scored a game-high 30 points (hitting 21-of-23 from the free throw line), led the charge for Rockford Christian. "We win close games," …

Fitzpatrick Free Throws Ignite Yorkville Charge

Foxes rally to knock off Morris in first-round game at the Plano Christmas Classic.

The 48th annual Plano Christmas Classic began with a bang as ninth-seeded Yorkville rallied to knock off fifth seed Morris 49-47 in a boys basketball barn-burner on Monday morning. Yorkville's charge was led by senior guard Derek Fitzpatrick, who connected on a slew of clutch free throws late in the fourth quarter as the Foxes overturned a seven-point deficit. In the first half, Yorkville was unable to get inside because of Morris' sagging 2-3 zone defense. With a congested lane full of Redskins, the Foxes were forced to take low-percentage perimeter shots. The Redskins expected to play a man-to-man defense, but junior forward Jake Olson ran into foul trouble. However, Morris (5-6) didn't miss a beat with its zone as the Redskins built a …
