Illinois State Police on Wednesday identified the man who died in a three-vehicle accident early Monday morning on Route 126 as Robert James Jr., 63, of Yorkville. Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said James was driving east on Route 126 between County Line and Ridge roads shortly before 6 a.m. when his four-door Mercury crossed into the westbound lane, hitting a box truck. State police said the driver of the truck attempted to avoid the Mercury but couldn’t, and wound up striking an eastbound Kia. James was extricated and taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead, police said. On Wednesday, state police said they still do not know what caused James to swerve into the oncoming lane, adding that …

Blood from both spouses found on Kimberly Vaughn's seat belt, which may have been unlatched after her death, could be a blow to the defense.
Drops of Christopher Vaughn's blood were found on his wife's shirt, shorts and the floorboard near her feet, a DNA specialist testified Friday. And drops of Kimberly Vaughn's blood were found on her husband's jacket, Illinois State Police forensic scientist Kelly Krajnik said. Taken alone or together, both seem to contradict Christopher Vaughn's story that his wife, perhaps angered by his alleged infidelity, shot him in the wrist and thigh as he sat in the driver's seat of their SUV and then -- after he fled the scene -- shot herself and their children. Perhaps just as damaging to Vaughn's defense was evidence Krajnik presented about blood from both Christopher and Kimberly Vaughn being found on the seat belt and buckle on Kimberly Vaughn'…

Jury in Vaughn murder trial also hears about odd bullet holes in Vaughn's jacket that an experts says were fired when the jacket was wrapped around the gun.
The bullet wounds Christopher Vaughn sustained were fired from a gun less than a half foot away from his body, an Illinois State Police firearms expert testified Thursday. Nicole Fundell, who works at the ISP crime lab in Joliet, said her tests determined that whomever fired the gun had the weapon less than six inches away from Vaughn's left thigh and less than an inch away from his left wrist, said Fundell examined bullet holes in Vaughn's jeans and fleece jacket, taken from him when he was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. The Oswego man, now 37, was later arrested and charged with the murders of his wife and three children on June 14, 2007, on a rural road near Channahon and accused of inflicting his own bullet …

In a second day of taped interviews shown to the jury at Vaughn's murder trial, the Oswego man changes his story and recalls that his wife fired a gun at him.
Head in his hands, Christopher Vaughn faced the floor, spoke in a barely audible voice and told investigators what he thought they wanted to hear: Yes, his wife shot him. In the second day of videotaped evidence presented at Vaughn's Will County murder trial, the jury was able to observe the Oswego man as he appeared on June 15, 2007, the day after his wife, Kimberly, 34, and his children, Abigayle, 12, Cassandra, 11, and Blake, 8, were found shot in the family's SUV. Vaughn, then 32, had undergone a grueling 14 hours of interviews with Illinois State Police detectives the previous day, dressed in the hospital gown he was given after being treated for gun shot injuries he received to his left wrist and thigh. Throughout those conversations…

Throughout hours of interviews conducted on the day his wife and children were killed, Christopher Vaughn erupts in anger just once.
Even with photos of his three children in front of him and detectives telling him his family had been "slaughtered," Christopher Vaughn showed almost no emotion as police interviewed him the day of the killings. In the hours of conversations Vaughn had with Illinois State Police investigators, shown via videotape to a Will County jury at his murder trial Tuesday, the Oswego man answered questions in a quiet monotone -- even as he was repeatedly accused of lying and of slaying his wife and children. "I lost everything. Everything that meant anything to me is all gone," Vaughn said at one point. "And this is your reaction? If it was my kids, I'd be f---ing crying," Special Agent Cornelius Monroe countered. "Good for you," Vaughn said in an …

Police interviewed Vaughn in the hours after his family's deaths in an attempt to figure out how they came to be stopped on an isolated road near Channahon.
Illinois State Police investigators broke the news that Christopher Vaughn's family was dead the way someone might approach ripping off a Band-Aid. "Your wife and kids are all dead," Sgt. Gary Lawson told him bluntly, perhaps hoping to provoke a response that might offer some clue as to whether Vaughn was the man who shot his family in cold blood as they sat inside their SUV as the sun rose on June 14, 2007. "No, that's not possible," Vaughn responded. "Why are you saying that? Can you just bring (my wife) in so I can talk to her?" Vaughn's interview with the state police, captured on videotape, was shown to a Will County jury Monday as his murder trial headed into its second week. In the tape, he insists neither he nor his wife, Kimberly…

An Illinois State Police crime scene tech involved in both the Drew Peterson and Christopher Vaughn cases seems to be posing a problem for prosecutors.
Prosecutors apparently feel Illinois State Police crime scene technician Robert Deel has done enough damage to high-profile murder cases for one month. Just two weeks after Deel testified under oath in the Drew Peterson murder trial that he believes Peterson's third wife Kathleen Savio actually died in an accident, prosecutors took steps to minimize Deel's role in the Christopher Vaughn murder trial. A motion penned by Will County Assistant State's Attorney Michael Fitzgerald asks Judge Daniel Rozak to stop Vaughn's lawyers from asking Deel about his involvement in the Peterson case or about a supposed letter sent to his supervisors. Fitzgerald requested Rozak "prohibit the defense from questioning Robert Deel about a letter he believes …

Police said the car carrying three teens — Brian Herrera and Tyler Montgomery of Plainfield, and Alexis Banuelos of Naperville — turned out in front of a semi-tractor trailer in Monday's fatal crash.
According to Illinois State Police Trooper Jason Shrake, charges are not expected in the crash that killed three teenagers near Oswego on Monday afternoon. Shrake said all evidence points to the driver of the black Ford coupe, 19-year-old Brian Herrera of Plainfield, causing the accident when he turned in front of a semi tractor-trailer heading east on Route 126. The truck tried to avoid the car, but ended up flipping on its side, pinning the car beneath it. Herrera and his passenger, 19-year-old Tyler Montgomery of Plainfield, were pronounced dead on scene. A second passenger, 18-year-old Alexis Banuelos of Naperville, was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The driver of the truck, …
