D115 Board Approves High School Expansion

Construction could begin by July 1, architects say.

CUSD 115 Board members unanimously approved the first phase of expansions to Yorkville High School, which could begin as early as July. Bids for the expansion, which could cost $12-$17 million, are expected to go out in May, with possible construction beginning July 1, Mark Miller of Concept 3 Architects told board members during Monday’s meeting. Based on other projects his company is working on, Miller told the board the current construction climate is advantageous to “aggressive bidding,” which could keep costs closer to the $12 million mark. However, he did warn that costs for building materials could increase due to climbing gasoline prices and rebuilding efforts in the northeast following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. “We …

R.D. The taxes were already jacked up to fund this project by a huge tax increase in 2006 I believe and the taxes are paid by us. The administrative salaries exploded after the referendum passed. The money did not go to the students or the teachers. It's a shame these taxes are not allocated to the benefit of the children.   more ›

District 115 Begins Architect Selection Process For YHS Expansion

Yorkville District 115 officials are developing questions to ask architectural firms applying for the high school expansion project.

Yorkville District 115 officials hope results from a questionnaire which will be given to prospective architectural firms will help them determine the best one for the Yorkville High School expansion and remodeling project. During during Monday's Organizational Oversight Committee meeting at the high school, members reviewed the questionnaire. District 115 Superintendent Scott Wakeley said school officials would like to use a local firm. “We don’t want someone from Colorado saying, ‘We want to be your architect,’ and then when we need somebody a year from now they’re nowhere to be found,” Wakeley said. Brian Debolt, the district’s director of building and grounds, said officials also want to work with a firm that has specifically done …

It seems as though Illinois needs to set higher standards. Roughly 130 districts had a perfect 4.0. Hopefully the public hears more about expansion ideas before an money is spent. I may be in the minority, but I think it is time to take a step back and have some public discussion. These are publicly funded schools. We deserve and should demand appropriate use of our funds. Yorkville is doing well…   more ›

Leaders Looking for Architect for Yorkville High School Expansion

District 115 board members will seek bids from several architects to keep the project cost-effective.

Yorkville District 115 officials want to expand Yorkville High School as smaller classes graduate and larger ones move into the building on Game Farm Road. But the project’s scope and price tag are still being determined. “We know we need a fieldhouse and an auditorium and some additional classrooms,” District 115 Superintendent Scott Wakeley said Tuesday. “Now we need to find an architect to find out what that type of project is going to cost and how we can make this project as cost efficient and cost effective as possible.” Officials have been discussing overcrowding for months, instituting a one-way policy in some stairways at the high school last academic year. About 1,130 students (sophomores through seniors) last academic year …

Someone will correct me if I am wrong. : ) The Raintree School was originally designed to become Yorkville High South when needed. I would say it is needed! Let the shuffle begin and provide a few more teachers with jobs. Better educations for the kids and another reason for people to move to Yorkville again.   more ›

Expansion Plans Considered for Yorkville High

District 115 board members begin discussions on possible expansion and renovation.

Yorkville High School has so many students and teachers packing the hallways, some stairways are one-way only. Students and staffers can walk either up or down those stairways as designated. The policy, implemented earlier this academic year, is designed to ensure that students travel the hallways safely and arrive to class on time, Principal Ronald Kiesewetter said. "(We created the one-way rule) so we don't have bottlenecks in certain intersections in the hallways," Kiesewetter said. "And it's been working." But those crowded conditions — in addition to larger grade sizes in the elementary schools and modest growth projections — have sparked preliminary conversations of possible expansion among school board members and administrators. …

Class sizes are going to fluctuate, so if the incoming class of juniors and seniors are the smallest classes, that won't last. Shuffling kids around is just a band-aid. There needs to be a long-term solution, but at the same time, you don't want to get crazy and start building a bunch of schools. I look at Oswego and really wonder if they need that 3rd high school. Sure, there will be a large …   more ›
