A guitar shop and party pad are coming to the city building at Bicentennial Riverfront Park.
Erich Goepel has started a handful of businesses, including the coffee shop that will celebrate its one-year anniversary at Bicentennial Riverfront Park on Nov. 5. Goepel's River City Roasters, along with Creative Kernels Gourmet Popcorn, were part of a relatively new concept for the city of Yorkville. The city rented space in a park building at 131 E. Hydraulic Ave. to the two businesses for a base rent plus 5 percent of their sales. The experiment is continuing with a few changes. Creative Kernels Gourmet Popcorn discontinued its lease in the south portion of the building, and White Water Ice Cream, which had subletted space from Creative Kernels, is expanding into the former popcorn space with a "party pad" for kids parties and group …

Yorkville city leaders backtrack after state says burying downtown utility wires not eligible for county revolving loan fund.
Yorkville can't borrow money from the county to bury the utility wires strung along the municipal parking lot near Cobblestone Bakery and Bistro, City Administrator Bart Olson said in a memo. "The various service lines and transformers appear to be several decades old, and in various states of disrepair," Olson wrote in a memo last month to City Council members. "Besides the potential for service issues, the equipment does not match the aesthetics of the surrounding downtown area." City leaders had been exploring borrowing $250,000 from the county's $1.9 million revolving loan fund, which provides loans to local businesses and government to create or retain local jobs. The project, requested by Imperial Investments, could be covered by the…

City leaders approved an incentive package for the restaurant, which would be built near Blackstone Bar & Grill.
Dairy Queen Grill and Chill is expected to be built in Yorkville by Feb. 28, according to a $30,740 sales tax rebate pact aldermen approved last week. Aniri LLC is expected to build a 2,187-square-foot restaurant at 704 E. Veterans Parkway that could employ 38 full-time employees and 35 part-time employees, according to a draft of the agreement presented last week. The corporation will receive a 0.5 percent sales tax rebate over 10 years or up to $30,740, whichever comes first, according to the draft agreement. Yorkville aldermen unanimously approve the pact Tuesday. Aniri LLC had been exploring building the restaurant in Kendall Marketplace, the shopping center that houses Target, but the developer abandoned those plans because of Kendall…

Despite discussions earlier this summer, Three Angels Brewing decided against bidding on the former post office location.
Yorkville leaders opened the lone bid for purchasing the former post office building Tuesday to discover they had no bids. Jason Leslie and Boyd Ingemunson, of Three Angels Brewing, didn't think three-quarters of the aldermen would support selling 201 Hydraulic St., so they decided against pursuing a purchase this summer. Mayor Gary Golinski broke a tie vote in favor of seeking bids in June after Leslie detailed hopes for the space along the Fox River. Leslie was considering building a craft beer manufacturing space, retail space, and terraced landscaping in the back leading to a riverside pathway. Leslie described the space as an extension of the Three Angels Brewing he started with Ingemunson, a local attorney, as well as a complement to…

Musician Jon Conover is handing booking for the theatre in the former location of The Follies Theatre downtown.
Yorkville's new downtown theatre's debut show will feature three singer-songwriters Friday in the former location of The Follies Theatre. Here is a news release provided by Rivers Edge Theatre: Musicians/Singers/Songwriters Jon Conover, Leslie Beukelman and Miles Nielsen will kick off the start of the singer/songwriter series at the new Rivers Edge Theatre. This series will bring the region’s best songwriters out to tell the stories behind their music every Friday in August and September. Rick Tollefson, of Imperial Investments, wants to use Cobblestone Bakery & Bistro as a template for other downtown projects.
Developer Rick Tollefson and his crew spun about three dozen different concepts before settling on three for the west side of Route 47 in Yorkville's downtown. "I hope what we build here is something people will be proud of," Tollefson said at a Tuesday morning meeting with local press. Tollefson, who also is president of sportsware manufacturer Boombah, plans to expand Cobblestone Bakery & Bistro to allow for more large-group seating and more bakery sales space. That would add 80 to 100 seats to the 40 interior seats and 20 exterior seats Cobblestone presently offers. Tollefson also plans to revamp The Follies Theatre into a performance area managed by musician Jon Conover and add a BD's Mongolian Barbeque-style restaurant next door. The …

Kendall County leaders explain what they have done since releasing a new economic development plan in December.
Kendall County’s economic development efforts center on a county employee, a $15,000 budget, a handful of county board members and a 72-page plan. The plan, approved in December after two public roundtables, looks to push the county’s economic development efforts beyond the $1.9 million revolving loan fund that saw some failed loans in past years as the economy plummeted. The plan targets industrial and manufacturing growth, partially in hopes of attracting jobs that pay more than basic retail jobs and partially to avoid duplicating more local efforts, such as the Yorkville Economic Development Corporation, Oswego's village Economic Development Department and the Montgomery Economic Development Corporation. The tasks may be relatively new …

To provide a bit of an update: City Administrator Bart Olson said it was the utility project itself that raised objections from state officials. So, city leaders and Imperial Investments can apply for county revolving loans for other construction projects that help provide jobs in Yorkville.   more ›
