Yorkville Accepting Offers for Old Jail

City leaders are accepting proposals from people who want to buy the building at 111 W. Madison St. until 4 p.m. Oct. 23.

Yorkville city leaders didn't receive any offers for the old post office building, but now they are seeking offers for the old jail. Aldermen decided Tuesday to accept bids for the former jail at 111 W. Madison St., which a group of residents have been raising money to restore into a museum for about two years. City leaders will accept bids until 4 p.m. Oct. 23 and will open the bids at the City Council meeting that starts at 7 p.m. that day. "I think it’s going to get restored quicker in the private sector than we’re ever going to get it," Ward 2 Alderman Larry Kot said. "If somebody out there wants it and fix it up, I’m all for it." The process will just affect the building, which hasn't been used as a jail since 1992. The city will …

Why not put the rec center in there and sell the old post office. Since we already have the jail.   more ›

Video: Zipping for Push for the Path

Yorkville alderman Diane Teeling made good on her promise Monday to ride the Cowabunga zip line at Raging Waves after reaching her $1,000 fundraising goal for the Kennedy Road bike trail.

Alderman Diane Teeling had $1,000 in her Push for the Path fundraising account Thursday - a week after the July 5 deadline - but she honored her pledge to ride the Cowabunga zip line at Raging Waves anyway. As she was taking the short "flight school" training Monday morning, Push for the Path supporters had raised $101,700.66 toward the goal of $357,000, which is the city’s 20 percent share of the Kennedy Road bike trail's cost. The 2.72 miles of trail will run along Kennedy Road from Route 47 to Mill Road. The Power of One fundraising effort challenged supporters to raise $1,000 by July 5, either individually or with a small team. Those donations are trickling in, but the 100 teams had collected $92,671.89 as of Monday morning.   Related …

Yes, Nancy, but at what cost? How about that of the taxpayers of this State, of which we are a part, and which is already in dire financial condition. This is definitely a case where the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Where else could State money be used for education, housing, medical care, or food for children throughout the state? The overwhelming sentiment to take money from…   more ›

Yorkville Considering Referendum, Rec Partnership with YMCA

City leaders exploring a $4 million referendum and partnering with the Fox Valley YMCA on an $8 million project.

A possibility for a new recreation facility is emerging as Yorkville leaders consider whether to purchase the REC Center when the lease expires next summer. Leaders are considering seeking a $4 million bond referendum so the city could split the cost of a new recreation facility with the Fox Valley Family YMCA, whose leaders have indicated they plan to build a new facility soon regardless of the city's plans with the REC Center. Alderman Chris Funkhouser revealed the details at Tuesday's Committee of the Whole meeting. Funkhouser led a meeting Monday with YMCA representatives, who are planning to review the idea with that organization's board members. The group did not determine where the building would be, what it would include or how it …

No City Park on Evergreen Farms

Aldermen reject pursuing a grant to buy land once proposed to store dirt from Route 47 construction project.

Yorkville aldermen soundly rejected a suggestion to pursue a state grant to buy the Evergreen Farms property and build a dog park, amphitheatre and sports fields there. That's the same land where D Construction Management wanted to store and spread clean fill from the Route 47 construction project - a project that aldermen also rejected by denying a special use permit. Since that vote, biosolids (sludge from a sewage treatment plant) was spread on the property. The land sits off Fox Street west of town near Pavillion Road. The city's part board suggested purchasing the property through an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant, which is a state grant, with the city using land along Kennedy Road owned by the Corlands as a…

Fundraising for Push for the Path at 40 Mph

Yorkville Alderman Diane Teeling is going to ride Raging Waves' new zip lines if she meets her $1,000 Push for the Path goal by July 5.

Push for the Path supporters have held garage sales. There have been concerts. And wine-tastings. All to raise money for Yorkville's portion of the Kennedy Road bike trail. Yorkville Alderman Diane Teeling is going to let gravity take control, though. From about seven stories in the air. Teeling plans to ride the new zip line course at Raging Waves if supporters donate $1,000 toward her Power of One goal by July 5. Power of One is a program challenging teams and individuals to raise $1,000 by the third anniversary of the accident on Kennedy Road that killed Darlene McCue. As of Wednesday, Power of One had raised $56,980, the bulk of the $64,392 Push for the Path has collected so far. Push for the Path leaders want to raise $357,000, which …

Yorkville Poised to Reject Kennedy Trail Grant

Aldermen in the city's Public Works Committee voted 3-1 to reject a $1.38 million grant that required a $357,320 match from the city.

City leaders are moving forward with bike trails along route 47 and 71, but a committee voted to halt plans for a bike trail along Kennedy Road, where a woman was killed in 2009 biking with her daughter. The City Council’s Public Works Committee voted 3-1 Tuesday not to accept a $1.38 million state grant for a trail along Kennedy Road. The grant would have required the city to provide $357,320 for the project. City leaders were researching on Friday if a City Council vote was needed to reject the grant or if the committee vote accomplished it, according to The Beacon-News. Voting against accepting the grant were Public Works Committee Chairman George Gilson Jr., Committee Vice Chair Jackie Milschewski and Committee Member Larry Kot. …

I agree with YorkVilian. It is very dangerous for anyone to be riding their bikes along Kennedy Road especially where the accident occurred. But, I continually see people riding their bike on this road. I hope for everyone involved another accident like this doesn't happen. It reminds me of the bridge dam... it took over 25 deaths for someone to take it serious enough to get improvements. The …   more ›

Yorkville Exploring Annexing 38 Acres

Two pockets of properties along routes 34 and 47 ultimately could be forcibly annexed into the city.

Yorkville staff likely will start reaching out to about 18 property owners this week about annexing into the city, City Administrator Bart Olson said. The two areas – one comprised of the lot south of Sunset Motel along Route 47 and the other land on both sides of Route 34 near McHugh Road – are surrounded by land that is already annexed into the city. Both areas ultimately could be forcibly annexed into Yorkville after public hearings and City Council votes. Annexing those parcels would add about 38 acres to the city, generate about $13,445 more in property taxes and garner about $52,000 more in sales tax, Olson said. The new sales tax revenue would be split between the city’s general and sewer funds. Certain services, such as police …

If only the tracks with commercial properties are to be annexed, then don’t be fooled, this is nothing more than a cash grab orchestrated by the Golinski administration. There are many pockets of unincorporated areas within the city boundaries, and most of them are residential areas, so to even allude to an increase in the efficiency of services is purely deceptive. Forced annexation is the type …   more ›

Yorkville Elected Officials' Health Insurance Cost City $72,000 This Fiscal Year

Depending on the plan an elected official chooses, he or she could more than double their overall compensation through health insurance.

A Yorkville alderman could more than double his or her overall compensation by opting into the city’s health insurance plan—an option Yorkville began offering its elected officials just more than four years ago. Yorkville’s mayor is paid $8,500 a year, plus $100 for each City Council meeting he or she attends, according to city code. Aldermen get $3,600, plus the $100 per City Council meeting. If they attend two meetings a month, the mayor receives about $910 a month and each alderman is paid $500 a month. They also have the option of receiving health insurance through the city, at a cost to the city of about $500 a month for a single plan and $2,000 a month for a family plan, City Administrator Bart Olson said. Overall, the city has paid…

Private Effort Underway to Fund Bike Trails

Ward 4 Alderman Diane Teeling and Yorkville Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Lynn Dubajic suggested a few fundraisers at Thursday's Park Board meeting.

Yorkville might find a way to pay for bike trails yet. Efforts are underway to privately raise the city’s 20 percent match for state grants to build trails along portions of routes 34, 47 and 71. The first goal is to raise about $116,000 to cover the 2.5-mile section of Route 47 the state plans to rebuild first. The city’s Park Board gave a green light to Ward 4 Alderman Diane Teeling and Yorkville Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Lynn Dubajic, who detailed their ideas Thursday night. Teeling presented the idea, with support from mayor-elect Gary Golinski, in light of the $1 million bond referendum that failed last week. Yorkville residents voted 1,517 to 1,199 against allowing the City Council to issue bonds to cover …
