The Yorkville boys basketball team beat Sycamore, 59-49, Friday, after garnering a tournament championship.
Winning a basketball tournament can be a very joyful and satisfying experience. It can also be an opportunity for a team to grow so that it’s playing its best when the games matter most during the rugged conference season. The Yorkville boys basketball team hopes to make a deep and successful run during Plano’s 49th Annual Christmas Classic, Dec. 26-30. The Foxes picked up their first conference victory (final score: 59-49) when they hosted Sycamore on Friday. Then, they’ll look for tournament triumphs to correlate into conference success. “We just have to be more prepared and find ways to win,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “Sometimes you have to win the hard way and you always have to come out and be ready to go.” Yorkville (6-2 …

Foxes haven't had a winning season in eight years, but are ready to change that while battling for the new conference title.
At the beginning of the classic baseball comedy Major League, folks from all different socioeconomic classes agree that the Cleveland Indians aren't particularly good. When an organization struggles and gets a reputation of losing, it can become difficult to shed that image and redefine itself. Yorkville is looking to do that this season as the Foxes hope to end an eight-year streak of losing seasons. The Foxes last had a winning campaign when they went 22-17 and won a sectional title in 2002. The team struggled through a 10-24 season last spring. "We lost a lot of close games last year that could've went either way," Yorkville first-year coach Scott Luken said. "For whatever reason we'd allow the other team to score a couple runs late, …

Yorkville 56, Minooka 43. Indians lead 14-5 after one quarter before Foxes control the second half for non-conference win.
The Hot Read: Yorkville used solid defense in the second half to follow up Friday’s conference win with a 56-43 non-conference boys basketball triumph over Minooka Saturday at home. Minooka connected on 5-of-6 shots in the first quarter and made good on its first six 3-pointers, but the Foxes grabbed their first lead in the third quarter and never relinquished the lead. The young Indians, who couldn’t maintain their hot shooting in the second half, dropped back-to-back games this weekend. Patch’s MVP: Yorkville’s Ryan Herron (14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 assist). Herron not only led his team in points, rebounds and blocks, but also led a defense that limited Minooka to six field goals in the second half. Key stats: The Indians shot …

After posting a 3-1 record at Plano tournament, the sky is the limit for coach Jerry Farber and the Foxes during the second half of the boys basketball season.
Yorkville enjoyed a successful week at the Plano Christmas Classic, and now the question for the Foxes' boys basketball team is, what's next? Yorkville (8-5) grabbed a third-place finish at Plano in Jerry Farber's final season as head coach. After entering the tourney unseeded and feeling disrespected in the process, the Foxes would go on an improbable run. They defeated No. 5 seed Morris, No. 4 seed Forreston and No. 6 seed Princeton, while almost advancing to the tourney's finals before dropping an overtime thriller against top-seeded Rockford Christian. "That's what you want in a competitive tournament like this," Farber said. "It's fun to watch and good for the kids to win three-out-of-four." Yorkville, which started the tournament at …

Piszczek's 10 points power Yorkville on final day of play at Plano Christmas Classic.
Yorkville displayed a knack for the dramatic all week long at the Plano Christmas Classic. After falling in an overtime thriller to Rockford Christian on Wednesday, the Foxes hoisted a trophy as they defeated Princeton 49-46 in boys basketball on Thursday. Yorkville junior guard Derek Piszczek's clutch shooting, as well as senior center Jordan Jones' post presence created the push for the Foxes to claim a third-place finish in Jerry Farber's final season as head coach. Piszczek scored 10 points, including two late free throws. Jones added nine points and nine rebounds. "We came out sluggish in the beginning of the game," Piszczek said. "(The Tigers) kept getting all of the loose balls. But, in this tournament, we came with a lot of energy …

Rockford Christian's Brayden Teuscher goes 21-of-23 from the free throw line to stop Foxes in a semifinal matchup at Plano Christmas Classic.
On the third day of the 48th annual Plano Christmas Classic, Yorkville's boys basketball team was grounded--but not without more excitement. The Foxes entered the tournament unseeded and, according to most of the players on their own roster, weren't expected to make much noise. But after an upset of No. 5 seed Morris and an upset of No. 4 seed Forreston, the Foxes were ready to crack up the volume once again. And, that they did, until they finally faltered against top seed Rockford Christian. The Royal Lions defeated Yorkville 63-56 in an overtime thriller on Wednesday night. Senior Brayden Teuscher, who scored a game-high 30 points (hitting 21-of-23 from the free throw line), led the charge for Rockford Christian. "We win close games," …

Farber diagrams 2-2-1 defense that Foxes use to puzzle Forreston, score second straight upset at Plano Christmas Classic.
On Day 2 at the 48th annual Plano Christmas Classic, the Yorkville boys basketball team played like its 'D' was No. 1. The Foxes (7-4) again turned away a higher seeded team as they defeated fourth seed Forreston 52-43 in second-round action on Tuesday afternoon. Yorkville's charge was lead by the Derek duo: Fitzpatrick and Piszczek. Senior guard Derek Fitzpatrick scored a team-high 10 points and netted his first four shots, while Derek Piszczek added eight points (5-of-6 from the free throw line) and five assists. Unlike the scoring struggles the Foxes experienced in Monday's upset of Morris, Yorkville hit its offensive ryhthm. The Foxes made 46.4-percent of their shots from beyond the three-point arc (13-of-28). The three-point shooting…

An explosive second half gives the undefeated Hubs a 71-58 victory over the host Foxes.
The Rochelle Hubs, after an uneven first half marred by poor shooting and foul trouble, caught fire early in the second half with a 15-point outburst within the first three minutes. The scoring spree vaulted the visiting Hubs to a 71-58 over the Yorkville Foxes on Saturday. The Hubs (6-0, 2-0) were aggressive on defense and offense the entire game. They put pressure on the Foxes (3-4, 1-1) in the backcourt and with a tenacious 2-3 zone at the frontcourt on defense. In spite of the pressure, Yorkville responded with good defensive and offensive rebounding and forced the aggressive Hubs into foul trouble early. A pair of late baskets gave the Foxes a 33-30 lead at the half. Ryan Herron led the Foxes with nine points and five rebounds. Guards…
