YHS Wrestling Looks to Senior Leadership

The Foxes head to the Dvorak with some momentum, winning five dual meets the week of Dec. 12.

One thing the Yorkville wrestling team doesn’t have to worry about is letting victories go to its head. That’s one of the many benefits of having terrific senior leadership. The Foxes have six seniors who are combining to play a crucial role for the team this winter. In fact, they helped the team complete its best stretch of the season, going 5-0 during a busy week that propelled the team to top of the conference. “We have tremendous senior leadership,” Yorkville coach Joe Fornell said. “In addition to knowing what they need to do, they’re helping the younger classes, showing them how to correct their mistakes and to work hard.” Yorkville improved to 3-0 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East conference with a 39-26 victory over Kaneland on …

Wrestling: A Nine-to-Five Day for Foxes

Five of Yorkville’s nine individuals competing at sectionals on Saturday qualified for the Class 2A state tournament.

Five are still alive. Of the nine individuals Yorkville sent to the Class 2A sectional wrestling tournament at Lincoln-Way West on Saturday, five of them place third or better to qualify for the state tournament. The Lincoln-Way West sectional is considered one of the toughest in the state, with three of the top five teams in Class 2A featured in the field--Montini, Marmion and Lincoln-Way West. Eight of the state’s top 25 Class 2A teams were represented. Yorkville wrestling Coach Shane Darnell believes his team did well against the tough odds. “I’m proud of the guys, we wrestled awesome today,” Darnell said. “These guys really showed up and they were ready to go. They wrestled hard for six minutes, and they kept themselves in the match …

Yorkville Wrestlers Grab 3rd in Rough Regional

Foxes beat the odds in Class 2A regional wrestling tournament, send nine individuals to sectionals.

Competing against two of the toughest teams in Class 2A wrestling didn’t deter Yorkville’s wrestlers on Saturday. Amid the roaring cheers and shouts from Marmion’s and Montini’s fan sections, each of which more than tripled Yorkville’s small crowd, support for the Foxes could hardly be heard during matches. Despite the tense atmosphere and diehard opposition, however, the Foxes placed third as a team and placed nine individuals in next week’s Class 2A sectional tournament at Lincoln-Way West. “I don’t think we were nervous for any of our matches,” Yorkville head coach Shane Darnell said. “Some of them we didn’t wrestle the best, but I don’t think it was nerves. I don’t know about them. It was a great atmosphere; it was a great wrestling …

Yorkville Wrestlers Roll Toward Tough Regional

Class 2A draw pins the Foxes against two perennial powerhouses and has them thinking in terms of achieving individual goals.

Yorkville easily defeated LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa in its final tuneup before hosting regional wrestling competition. Yet, this weekend the Foxes will find themselves grappling for survival as they compete against two of the toughest teams in Class 2A. In the Yorkville Regional on Saturday, the Foxes will be battling against the likes of Montini and Marmion Academy, the second- and third-ranked teams in Class 2A. “Regionals is going to be a tough contest for us,” Yorkville assistant coach Joe Fornell said after last Thursday’s quad. “Montini and Marmion are there, so we’re going to test our mettle and see where we’re at. A lot of these guys are going to have a tough tournament. It’s going to be great competition, a really good day of …

Pin Pals: Yorkville Wrestlers Dominate Quad

Foxes win easily against rivals LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa as they gear up for regional competition.

Yorkville’s Connor Bass watched the clock while wrestling his opponent. He pinned Ottawa’s Randy Hoxsey at 1 minute, 54 seconds, looking not the slightest bit worried about prolonging his win. And so went the majority of Yorkville’s matches during Thursday’s quad meet that also featured LaSalle-Peru and Morris. The quad, which is primarily a tune-up meet before regionals, set Yorkville against LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa, two conference schools the Foxes don’t meet during the regular season. Yorkville didn’t compete against Morris since the two teams had met earlier in the season as part of their conference bracket. “With regional coming up at the end of next week, we want to get something in between there to keep these guys on their toes and …

Wrestling: Yorkville Happy to Enter a Bass Competition

Identical twins Clayton and Connor Bass already getting job done for the Foxes, look to take over team leadership duties next season.

Growing up, Yorkville wrestling standouts Clayton and Connor Bass were huge competitors with plenty of “ups and downs.” Their father, Mike Bass, recalls them engaging in wrestling matches around the house. “They broke the drywall in the basement and have thrown each other through windows,” Mike said. “Then, they give each other hugs.” The identical twins began wrestling in second grade when their father, who said he’s too short for basketball, wanted to find them a sport in which they could be competitive. Since then, their sibling rivalry has been an intricate part in helping them establish themselves as strong competitors at Yorkville. “You grow up with a twin brother and always have someone right there with you, and it helps establish …

Wrestlers Pin Down Big Wins at Conference Tournament

Yorkville’s wrestling team walked away with three first-place medals from the Northern Illinois Big 12 tournament on Saturday.

Saturday was a long but proud day for Yorkville’s varsity wrestlers. The Northern Illinois Big 12 conference tournament began at 9 a.m. and didn’t end until 6 p.m., but Yorkville left with eight individual medals and a fifth-place team finish. Yorkville had three first-place finalists. Junior Connor Bass, wrestling in the 135-pound weight class, and seniors AJ Messenger (171) and Brant Corwin (189) each took away first-place medals. “The guys wrestled pretty good today,” Yorkville coach Shane Darnell said. “Brant, AJ and Connor obviously did a really good job. Getting first place, that’s an awesome accomplishment for them here at conference.” The top-seeded Corwin came into the tournament with a 32-7 record and was ranked fourth in his …

Foxes Advance Pair to Dvorak Semifinals

Yorkville wrestlers Connor Bass, AJ Messenger win quarterfinal matches, while three others fall short.

Considering the level of competition they faced Wednesday, Yorkville's wrestlers enjoyed a pretty successful opening day at the Al Dvorak Tournament. The Foxes had five individuals competing in the quarterfinals and advanced a pair of them to Thursday's semifinals at Harlem in Machesney Park. Those performances helped Yorkville to collect 70.5 points, which was good for 16th place midway through the state's top regular-season meet. Earning trips to the semifinals following quarterfinal victories were Connor Bass (135 pounds) and AJ Messenger (171). Brant Corwin (189) saw his hopes of reaching the semifinals dashed when he got pinned in overtime in his match. Also coming up short in the quarterfinals for the Foxes were Clayton Bass (140) …

Yorkville Wrestlers Look to Uphold Winning Tradition

With a history of state championships to the school's credit, current coach Shane Darnell maintains high standards for the Foxes.

Over the last 40 years, wrestling has become the signature sport at Yorkville High School. The Foxes have won three state championships and posted top-three finishes on six other occasions. Their hopes for bringing home more hardware this winter rest squarely on the shoulders of a cast of five returning state qualifiers. "Our goal never changes," said Yorkville coach Shane Darnell, who took over the program six years ago. "Our goal is to compete individually and as a team for a state championship." There is another common denominator for the quintet of returning Class 2A state qualifiers for Yorkville: the five have moved up a combined 15 weight classes this year. The Foxes have a murderous schedule, and this weekend represents one of many…
