Reubens Are All About the Corned Beef

Three local restaurants. Three warm, tasty sandwiches. Which is the best?

I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy a Reuben. It's large enough that I need an appetite that a burger or pasta won't quite satisfy. I need to be in the mood to sit and actively digest food (and hopefully good conversation and/or television) after eating this grilled sandwich with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and dressing. That mood hit last week, so I accepted a Chowdown Showdown challenge to consume three of these monstrous sandwiches in close proximity. How else was I going to discover who offers the best Reuben in Yorkville? Sunfields Restaurant First, I hit up Sunfields, which wowed me not too long ago with its freshly squeeze orange juice and Sunfields Benedict. The Reuben was admittedly less impressive. The bread was …

Glutton for Yummy Gyros

How do you say gyros? Jy-ros? Yee-row? Forget the pronunciation, Yorkville Patch writer Marcus Schulz goes in search of the perfect local version of the Greek classic.

Yorkville gyros may sound to some like a Greek myth. Yet Yorkville has several restaurants providing excellent gyros variations. Greek gyros, pronounced something like yee-row, normally consist of pork meat sliced from a rotisserie, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce on a pita. However, many “American” gyros are made with lamb or a combination of beef and lamb. Sunfields Restaurant, 382 E. Veterans Pkwy The Greek owners at Sunfields Restaurant know how to make gyros. Their gyros platter comes with a healthy portion of sliced gyros, tzatziki sauce, sliced tomato, onions and cucumber, un-pitted kalamata olives, chunks of feta cheese and a quarter-sliced pita on a bed of lettuce. The $8.29 platter also came with a bowl of soup and plate of …

Who Deserves the Yorkville Pizza Prize?

In dedication to all the pizza lovers in Yorkville, I taste-tested a few to rate the best in town.

For this segment of Chowdown Showdown, I visited a few local pizzerias to find the parlor who deserves the best pizza prize for the Yorkville area. A pizza is the perfect dish for a Sunday football game, birthday parties, and other fun casual occasions. I judged the following pizza’s by taste and quality and recommended the one that stands as most excellent. Genoa Pizza, 202 E Countryside Parkway My first stop was Genoa Pizza where I tried the thin crust cheese and sausage pizza. Once I entered the small shop I was overwhelmed by the smell of pasty sauce, herbs, and other ingredients. The pizza smelled so good I dug right in and completely forgot to take a photo of the pizza as a whole. It was that good! The flavorful sauce was tasty with …

Authentic pizzerias ARE dirty! Some how, it seems to produce the best pizzas! ;-) (For the record, I'm a germ-a-phobe.....but I can set my phobias aside for the sake of pizza & Indian food - exclusively.) :-) I need to find out exactly if this is accurate, but I believe that Genoa maybe uses a different sauce on their deep dish vs. their regular crust. I love ordering the 'regular' on Wed/Thurs …   more ›
