Theater is on target to open at the end of 2013.
If you've driven down Route 47 near Route 34 you may have seen some construction going on. The large walls going up inside the Countryside Center will be home to the new Kendall Crossing Movie Theater. City administrator Bart Olson said construction is moving along "smoothly" and the theater is expected to open at the end of the year. Earlier estimates pin the opening for November. Ground was broken for the theater back in January and construction started in mid-april. The 38,500-square-foot theater will have 10 screens and is expected to include digital projection and sound and be capable of showing 3-D films on each screen. The city of Yorkville is awaiting a detailed construction schedule.
The long delayed River Road Bridge construction project may come to an end as early as the beginning of July, according to a city official. "Staff did estimate at last month’s Public Works Committee that the bridge could be open by July 1 if all else goes smoothly," said city administrator Bart Olson in an email. "However, that’s our estimate, not the contractor’s." SEE: Photos of Blackberry Creek Dam Removal The bridge, which shared an abutment with the Blackberry Creek dam, was closed in 2011 after officials noticed a crack in the abutment worsening. They had planned to remove the dam, replace the bridge and restore traffic by October of 2012. That deadline wasn't met due to delays moving electrical equipment.

City Administrator to discuss ways for businesses and the city to work together.
United City of Yorkville Administrator Bart Olson will meet with area business leaders Tuesday to discuss ways to improve the business climate and opportunities within Yorkville at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Cobblestone Bakery and Bistro. Topics will include ways in which businesses can work with the city and how feedback received by the chamber can be used by area businesses to improve services. The luncheon will begin with a networking session at 11:30 a.m. followed by the meal and program at noon. The meal and program is $20 for chamber members and $25 for non-members.

The bridge that sits on River Road west of Route 47 likely won't be open this year, city officials said.
Motorists probably won't be able to take River Road from west from Yorkville this calendar year, Yorkville officials announced Friday. The bridge, which shared an abutment with the Blackberry Creek dam, was closed last year after officials noticed a crack in the abutment worsening. They had planned to remove the dam, replace the bridge and restore traffic by October. City leaders met to discuss the construction project last week.
Last May, the River Road bridge was closed down after a growing gap was spotted in the west abutment. Now, a year later, the bridge that goes over Blackberry Creek will undergo construction to make it once more available to motorists later in the year. “A preconstruction meeting was held this week. I am pleased with the project's progress and the tentative construction schedule,” said Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski. Aldermen OK agreement to bring popcorn, frozen yogurt vendors to park; more leases could be coming.
Yorkville aldermen approved a lease this week that will bring two concession vendors to Bicentennial Riverfront Park, as city leaders discuss a few other proposals that could place small businesses in city facilities. Yorkville will hold its Kayak Attack to mark the official opening of the Glen D. Palmer Dam canoe and kayak course.
The United City of Yorkville is celebrating the grand opening of the Glen D. Palmer Dam canoe and kayak course this Saturday. But already the new course has made an economic impact on downtown Yorkville. This March, inspired by the new kayaking and canoeing facility, Geneva Kayak Center rented space in a city-owned building and moved its business to 301 E. Hydraulic, right near the Glen D. In an effort to reduce expenses, the Yorkville Public Library announces shortened operating hours starting May 1.
The Yorkville Public Library will shave 12 hours off its weekly hours starting May 1 and eliminate its Sunday hours during the summer as part of a series of budget cuts. The library also is reducing its supply purchases and part-time staff hours. And a part-time maintenance man decided to donate his time, Library Director Michelle Pfister said. She hopes the measures are temporary in light of the poor economy. “The full-time staff are going to have to step up to the plate and help out,” Pfister said. The revised operating budget, which library board members approved last week, anticipates $736,950 in revenues and $1,060,275 in expenses, for an overall deficit of $323,325 for the fiscal year starting May 1. Yorkville might find a way to pay for bike trails yet. Efforts are underway to privately raise the city’s 20 percent match for state grants to build trails along portions of routes 34, 47 and 71. The first goal is to raise about $116,000 to cover the 2.5-mile section of Route 47 the state plans to rebuild first. The city’s Park Board gave a green light to Ward 4 Alderman Diane Teeling and Yorkville Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Lynn Dubajic, who detailed their ideas Thursday night. As a wheelchair user, I'm hoping they copy the seating setup from Wow7 where the accessible spots are at the base of the stadium seats, and not Kendall10's setup, where they're at the top of the front floor-level seats... that few feet make a lot of difference. more ›
