Multi-Sport Athletes Guide YHS Girls Hoops

So far, the Lady Foxes are 4-3 overall and 1-2 during play in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference.

You may recognize several of the names on Yorkville High School girl's basketball roster. As a freshman this past spring, Corrine Rowe helped Yorkville's softball team win a regional title and was an honorable mention all-conference selection. At around the same time, Brittany Straznickas was chosen as the team MVP of the girls soccer team. More recently this fall, Straznickas and senior Jordann Dhuse helped the volleyball team establish a school record for victories in a season. Finally, in early November, Ali Hester finished sixth in the state to help the Lady Foxes win their first cross country state title. After demonstrating their fantastic athletic abilities in cross country, soccer, softball and volleyball, the four have now turned …

Yorkville Teens Design Promwear with Duck Tape

Junior Ali Hester, senior Scott King plan to enter scholarship contest after wearing clothing made of 41 rolls of duct tape to Saturday's prom.

Yorkville High School junior Ali Hester probably won’t pin a boutonniere on her boyfriend of two years before prom Saturday. She’ll use duct tape, instead. In fact, most of their outfits are constructed from duct tape. The pair designed and made a dress, suit and accessories from Velcro, tissue paper, a bit of wire and 41 rolls of duct tape in black, silver, pink and two shades of green. Hester’s boyfriend, senior Scott King, joked about fashioning duct-tape wear with a friend his freshmen year, but he and Hester have dedicated more than 200 hours to their project in the past few months. They plan to enter a scholarship contest sponsored by Duck, a major duct tape brand, that will award scholarships to ten couples who wore their product to…

Yorkville Sports Recap

YHS Baseball Team Won Five of Six Games Last Week

In softball, Yorkville won four out of five games last week, while the girls soccer team fell to IMSA and Coal City.

It was a very busy, and extremely rewarding, week of action for the Yorkville baseball team. Playing six games in as many days, the Foxes went 5-1 to boost their season’s record to 8-2. Their lone loss came on Tuesday as Burlington Central took advantage of some sloppy play by the Foxes to win, 3-1. “Well, 6-0 is better than 5-1, which we could have been,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said. “It was a combination pitcher’s duel but we walked seven and they walked zero, and we had three errors. They scored all three of their runs without the ball leaving the infield.” Luken is stressing pitching and defense this spring. The team struggled with both on Tuesday, but the pitchers did their part for most of the week, although the defense was …

Extra Points: Foxes’ Turner Forces Turnovers

Streator suffers from Devin Turner’s steals and rebounds.

Saturday’s game in Streator highlighted Devin Turner’s role for the Yorkville girls basketball team. While not one of the team’s top scorers, the 6-foot center’s defensive positioning led her to five rebounds and four steals in the Foxes' 60-29 victory.  “Devin did a nice job on the back side,” Yorkville coach Luke Engelhardt said. “She does a real good job reading passes, and she did again today. She got a couple steals and got our transition game going because of our defense there.” Although the Foxes started off slow against Streator (2-20), Turner and her teammates on defense held the Bulldogs to 10 points in the second half. Engelhardt said the Foxes picked up their defense after Streator’s leading scorer, Liz Liptak, erupted for 10 …

Girls Basketball: Yorkville Sinks Struggling Streator

Yorkville 60, Streator 29. Foxes use defense to generate offense.

The Hot Read: Yorkville’s fast pace and tight defensive pressure led to more than 15 Streator turnovers in the Foxes' 60-29 girls basketball victory Saturday. Starting off slow, Yorkville was only up 25-19 at the half. However, after two three-point shots early in the third quarter, the Foxes started working their way to doubling the Bulldogs' score. Patch’s MVP: Yorkville’s Devin Turner (10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals). While Turner wasn’t the Foxes’ highest scorer, she made sure Streator struggled for every basket by rebounding and constantly stealing the ball.   Key stats: After removing nearly all its starting lineup in the fourth quarter, Yorkville still held Streator to four points. Also, eight of Streator’s 29 points were scored on…
