The Parks and Recreation Dept.'s mission is "to create unique recreational and park experiences that enrich lives andMore create a sense of community." The department is part of city government and does not receive a separate tax levy, although the department also is under the direction of a seven-member advisory board. The department is responsible for more than 40 parks, as well as the REC Center, basketball and soccer leagues and other programs.

Hiding Spot Park is an award-winning mini-park with a musical theme. It covers about 1.5 acres on Park Street north ofMore the Fox River. Kids can make their own music on plastic bongos, drums, horns, whistles and other rhythm instruments built right into the playground. There is also a climbing wall, two bocce ball courts, a picnic area, a sand box and a shelter. Hiding Spot Park won the Illinois Park and Recreation Association's 2007 Outstanding Facility & Parks Award - Division II.
