Celebrate Differences Receives Home Depot Grant

Volunteers turned out Friday morning to help prepare the organization’s new home.

As continues to grow, so does its need for a larger space to better accommodate its families and organizations.

Enter The Home Depot Foundation.

Celebrate Differences, an Oswego not-for-profit, aims to create a place for families of children with disabilities to feel a part of a larger, accepting community. The organization moved into its current home of 5375 Route 34 , but founder and executive director Rebecca Christiansen said they realized it wasn’t going to work.

“We work alongside several organizations and this space, although larger than our old office, is not large enough for what we want to accomplish.”

Christiansen reached out to The Home Depot Foundation for a grant to help fund the move to a larger space. They responded with an affirmative and a grant of $7500 for Celebrate Differences.

The organization is moving two doors down into an adjacent suite of the current building.

A volunteer team from Home Depot came out last Friday to help with painting, laying down tiles and getting the space ready. They were also working to build a fence outside to enclose a space of grass that would function as an outdoor play area.

Lee Patterson, a volunteer from the Oswego Home Depot, said he loves the chance to give back something to the community. “It’s all for a good cause,” he said, watching his fellow volunteers cover the walls in a light taupe paint.

Home Depots in the area have several volunteers come together to help out with local projects to organizations that have received help from the Foundation.

donated lunch for the volunteers and an array of donuts and coffee was available for breakfast.

Christiansen, holding a paintbrush of her own, said they were hoping to be finished by August 17. “That’s when we’re having our next event,” she said, half laughing.

A mural will be painted later in the new space, said Christiansen, although a design is still to be worked out.
