Safety Check on I-294 This Friday and Saturday

Checkpoint will be set up in southbound lanes near O'Hare Airport.

Heading into St. Patrick's Day weekend, the State Police will conduct a roadside safety check on the southbound Tri-State Tollway near the Irving Park Road exit and O'Hare International Airport on Friday and Saturday, the Illinois Toll Highway Authority announced Monday.

The I-294 safety check will take place between 11 p.m. Friday, March 14, and 4 a.m. Saturday, March 15, said Capt. Patrick Kimes.

"The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois," reads the tollway authority's statement. "Officers working this detail will be watchful for drivers who are operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, transporting open alcoholic beverages, or driving under the influence (DUI)."

(Yes, the original headline stated I-249 instead of I-294. Because drinking and typing don't mix, either.)

Listen up and quit being stupid. St. Paddy's weekend is as dangerous as NYE or the night before Thanksgiving and probably worse. In my hood, by the time I wake up the idiots are already fall down drunk. When I worked at an Irish bar in the suburbs, I saw people so wrecked, they could barely make it to the parking lot to drive home. In this case, the cops had it right. They waited for them to turn the ignition on in the parking lot, then put the hurt on them before they got out to the street. As far as I am concerned, public safety on a night like this trumps any of your silly libertarian concerns. Who knows? it might just prevent a twenty something full of Jager Bombs and Jameson from killing you in a head on, and and you can vote for your favorite exploding head in November instead of getting put into the ground in 10 separate plastic bags . . .

Silly libertarian? Really? If it wasn't for those silly libertarians you might not be able to post what you just stated. I understand the point you're trying to make, but don't judge those that fight for your freedoms. I personally do not want to live in a police state!

Drunk drivers are a menace, and need to be stopped. Stopping every car on the road and harassing everyone with no probable cause is stupid, and unconstitutional. It just reinforces that this country is turning into a police state. There are plenty of ways to spot and stop drunk drivers for cause without infringing on the rights of the rest of us and violating our highest laws in the process.

I hope my plane isn't delayed. I don't want to sit on 294 at 11pm so they can waste a bunch of time. If you think drunk drivers are bad in IL you need to visit Texas.

I think having alcohol in cars is mandatory in Texas... They have drive through liquor stores.
