River Road Bridge Finally Open

Taking the long way around no longer an issue for area residents.

After months and months of delay, the River Road bridge has finally been re-opened.

Yorkville city administrator Bart Olson said the bridge was opened to vehicular traffic at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The bridge, which shared an abutment with the Blackberry Creek dam, was closed in 2011 after officials noticed a crack in the abutment worsening. They had planned to remove the dam, replace the bridge and restore traffic by October of 2012.

That deadline wasn't met due to delays moving electrical equipment. Construction began in earnest this spring.

The city originally had estimated a July 1 opening.
