Extra Points: Foxes Ready for Return

With three starters returning next season, Yorkville's girls basketball team looks forward to better times.

Yorkville High ended its season with a close overtime loss in the regional tournament against Rosary on Tuesday night, although with three starting players returning for their senior year, the Foxes hope to go further next season.

“We’ve got a great group,” Yorkville coach Luke Engelhardt said. “Our juniors, Jordann (Dhuse), Ali (Hester), and Cara (Schlichting) started all season. They’ll be asked to lead the team. And then we have a great group of juniors coming up. Our sophomores are like 17-6. I think we should be setting the tone for the next couple of years.”

“We’re going to try to even go farther,” the Foxes’ Hester said. “I want to win, and I want to push farther than we did this year, maybe get a few more wins in conference too."

After a difficult start this season, the Foxes have shown major improvement. They began 4-7 at Christmas time and ended up 12-13 after Tuesday’s game.

“We wanted to get a few more wins in there, but you can’t look at the wins and losses,” Engelhardt said. “From day one, if you would have seen us at the red and white skirmish, when we were dribbling off our arms, our feet, our heads. I don’t even know if we scored in that entire skirmish.

"To coming back from a 4-7 record at Christmas time to go on [to near] 500, the girls improved so much. They came together as a group. They bought into the system. Every one of them did everything I asked the entire season, and it showed right there.”
