The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 39-02, based in Des Plaines, IL. will be offering two classes for more experienced mariners. "How To Read a Nautical Chart" will be presented June 16, 2012, at 0830.

Charts contain information on dangerous areas, aids to navigation, harbors, wrecks, depth of water, bottom type, and magnetic variations affecting the compass.

This course will provide the recreational boater with the knowledge to interpret the chart’s contents in order to operate the boat safely. Text and training chart included.

"GPS for Mariners" will be presented July 21 at 0830.

This Coast Guard Auxiliary class focuses on the Global Positioning Satellite navigation equipment typically owned by the recreational boater. Students will learn how to use a GPS for practical navigating, setting and using waypoints and for more advanced applications.  Participants who already own hand-held GPS units should bring them to the class.

Note: The “How to Read a Nautical Chart” class includes information that will improve the understanding of GPS.

Classes are $45 each, which includes class materials.  Advance registration is required. Contact the Des Plaines Park District, 847-391-5700 orwww.DPParks.org
