Ornament Sale at CCGS Benefits Illinois Tornado Victims

"My best hope is that my students will have a greater understanding of the power of giving and even children can make a difference."

Can you make a difference? This was the question Mrs. Bridge posed to
her 3rd grade class at Circle Center Grade School. When students enthusiastically
answered, "yes" the class set to work planning how they could help others this holiday season.

After learning how kids have raised money for typhoon victims in the Philippines
by selling various items for charity, the class brainstormed ways they could assist those in need.

After weighing the positives and logistics of selling various items such as hot chocolate or baked goods, the students decided to make ornaments to sell to their classmates. The proceeds from the ornament sale, they concluded, would benefit tornado victims of Illinois.

The students researched ways to make simple, but cute, ornaments and
volunteered their time by staying after school to make them. Altogether, the students created 200 ornaments and hope to make $200 in sales.

"This project goes beyond the traditional lessons and teaches young people that they can make a difference," said Bridge. "Too many of us have lost the true meaning of Christmas with lengthy lists of what we feel we cannot live without. But these families have lost everything.

"My best hope is that my students will have a greater understanding of the power of giving and even children can make a difference."
