board members have given the OK to several new courses for high school students.

In the coming years, students will have the option of taking Introduction to Philosophy, Journalism and Publication Production, and honors German classes.

“We are really excited about the courses being added to the curriculum,” said Board member Peter Athens. “The faculty should be commended for bringing them to us. This is really exciting.”

Members of the district’s Applied Learning and Technology Committee were given an overview of the proposed classes Oct. 17.

For now, officials are holding off on approving a 21st Century Reading and Writing course.

Proposed by English teacher Jamie Rominski and geared toward seniors, the class would have students reading contemporary novels and periodicals, as well as writing for the real world situations including business, social, and personal contexts.

Some board members have suggested the course would make more sense as two separate entities. They are waiting for a more in-depth overview of what the semester would entail.

In the meantime, school officials are excited about the new course offerings.

“This enables us to expand the horizons of the students,” Board Member Robert Brenart said. “It’s nice to be in a position that gives us the ability to do that.”

“I just think it’s exciting we’re taking this on,” added fellow Board Member Dean Fisher. “It’s fun to have these kinds of things happen.”
