Bristol Bay Ready to Boogie

Elementary school PTO to host fundraiser race Oct. 9.

PTO is calling all casual walkers and serious runners to bring the entire family out for a good cause — PTOs. On Oct. 9, the Bristol Bay PTO will hold its inaugural Bristol Bay Boogie.

According to Julie Burson, one of the race organizers, the idea for the walk came from the success her husband and fellow organizer, Doug had with the Grizzly Gallop, held at Granger Middle School in Aurora last year.

“Last year was their inaugural year, and they had about 900 registrants for it, which is virtually unheard of for a race around here,” said Burson.

The PTO is expecting about 300 participants for the Boogie.

“We would love to have more! While having 900 like my husband’s school had would be a challenge for us to manage, it’s a challenge we’d love to take on,” Burson said.

Participants can choose between the one mile fun run/walk for $15 or a more serious 5K run/walk for $20. Racers also can register at a family rate of $50 for four runners in either race.

Those electing to do the one mile run/walk can do so with dogs and strollers; many of the students from will be doing the one mile. The 5K participants will include some walkers and many avid runners. The 5K will be timed via a chip for those more serious runners/walkers.

In addition to the whirl of runners and walkers, there will be a silent auction of items donated by sponsors, music to entertain, and water and food for the walkers and runners. Those who register by Sept. 25 will receive a Boogie T-shirt featuring a fox mascot.

“We hope that people will come away from the race with the feeling that they accomplished something, whether it is finishing a race or helping the school educated our kids as best it can,” said Burson.

Most of the proceeds from the race will benefit the PTO. However, for every student and staff member who participates from another school in , money will be given back to his or her school's PTO.

The Bursons, along with other helpful parents and staff, are excited for the event.

“We have been so lucky to have parents that are enthusiastic about planning this event, as well as supportive teachers willing to sacrifice some of their precious free time to help," said Burson. "It has also helped that Mr. Taylor, the principal at BBES, has been extremely supportive, enthusiastic and accommodating through this whole process.”

Those wanting to participate should visit www.bristolbayboogie.com, print the registration form and mail it to the given address. The registration form is also available at the and other school offices in District 115.

Sign up is recommended by Sept. 25, but will also be available on race day.
