Post J - Rob and Katie on Casey Anthony

Rob and Katie discuss their take on the Casey Anthony trial.

Naughty, naughty Rob. He didn’t blog last week. Being the excellent wife I am I decided to go ahead and take my turn at going first even though he failed in his obligation last week. I am assuming this means I will get a week off of my choice.

So, better late than never I suppose, I want to talk about Casey Anthony.

Katie Says -

I think the jury got it right. I have heard some statements from the jury and most of them seem to agree that not guilty is not the same as innocent.

Now, I did not watch the trail but I did read about what evidence was presented and I think that the country, in its outrage over a little girl’s death, had failed to remember that the prosecution has the burden of proof. They are required to prove that she committed this crime beyond a reasonable doubt. The defense has no obligation to convince the jury that Casey Anthony did not commit any crimes. The burden of proof rests solely on the prosecution.

It did not sound to me like the prosecution made its case.

This may be frustrating to many of us as we believe she did it and we believe she is getting away with murder. Instead of being outraged at Casey Anthony or the jury, we should direct our anger where it belongs, the prosecution.  Bottom line, they didn’t do their job .

To be fair, I didn’t know any details of the case until maybe 3 weeks before the trial ended. I wasn’t up on the investigation, or the arguments. I do have the opinion, though, that given as much free yardage as the prosecutors were given - they must have had a TERRIBLE case based on the evidence when you consider the rapidity with which the jury found Ms. Anthony innocent.

Criminals as awful as Ms. Anthony is purported to be don’t escape our justice system easily. The prosecution had just as much of a chance to examine potential jurists as the defense. The prosecution as far as I can tell simply wasn’t up to the challenge of trying this case.
