Sheriff's Office: Limit Road Travel

Some local cancellations listed; the National Weather Service's winter storm warning is in effect until 9 a.m. Friday.

warned that road travel could be hazardous as 4 to 8 inches of snow are expected to fall across the county and surrounding area.

"We want to advise everyone to travel only if you have to and if you do use extreme caution when driving," the sheriff's office news release stated. "The Sheriff’s Office has already received several reports of accidents and vehicle spin outs."

The National Weather Service advised that up to 8 inches of snow is expected to fall through 9 a.m. Friday, with gusting winds complicating the evening commute. The snow could accumulate at one inch per hour through the afternoon and evening.

The Yorkville Public Works crews spread salt as snow started to fall Thursday morning but were waiting to see what Mother Nature dumped before making firmer plans.

Yorkville Public Works Director Eric Dhuse said the storm was attracting media attention because it is expected to be the first significant snowfall of the season, but Dhuse and his crew were taking it in stride.

“Nobody knows exactly what’s going to happen," Dhuse said about 11 a.m. Thursday. "Right now, we’re out there doing a light salting.”

Local cancellations announced:

• The 's PAY program scheduled for Friday has been rescheduled for Jan. 20. Local business meeting with U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren are still scheduled for Friday.

• The Yorkville Park Board meeting for Thursday, Jan. 12, has been rescheduled for Jan. 19.

• The January meeting of the Kendall County Young Republicans has been canceled, according to the group's Facebook page.

• For Yorkville District 115, all sports practices and the middle school basketball game will continue as planned. The middle school band concert, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., has been canceled. Also canceled were a high school wrestling meet and a high school basketball game.

• At the Fox Valley YMCA, "Bouncin' Babies" and "Flip N Fun" are canceled for Friday morning, according to the organization's Twitter page. The programs are running as normal Thursday evening but the facility will close at 8:15 p.m. Thursday.
