Yorkville Names Whitewater Course Days Before Ribbon-Cutting

The new whitewater chute at the Glen Palmer dam is named in memory of Marge Cline, a beloved paddling instructor.

Yorkville’s whitewater course has been named for afterall.

The newly sworn-in Yorkville City Council adopted the name Tuesday, about two months after . On Tuesday, Ward 2 Alderman Gary Golinski was sworn in as mayor and four new aldermen were seated.

Golinski voted against the proposal in March but said this week he was comfortable with the name after Park Board members took another look at it. The Park Board initially had recommended against the naming request but had reconsidered before Tuesday’s City Council vote.

“The Park Board should have an enormous amount of input on decisions like this,” Golinski said in an e-mail. “Once Mr. Koch, the Park Board President, contacted IDNR and the Park Board become comfortable with the naming request, the Park Board sent a positive recommendation to the City Council and it received unanimous support.

"Sometimes the process may take a little longer than people feel it should, but in the end, things usually work out the way they're meant to be," Golinski continued.

Before the March 8 vote, Golinski also had expressed concerns that the name “Marge Cline Whitewater Course” didn’t directly promote Yorkville.

Before casting his vote Tuesday, Ward 1 Alderman Carlo Colosimo said he found it fitting that the course – build next to a dam were people have drowned – be named after someone who had been so dedicated to water safety and education.

Yorkville city leaders are hosting on Saturday to formally recognize the new whitewater course's completion.
