Tollway's New Webcams Show Road Conditions

The cameras let you view road congestion -- or lack thereof -- before you walk out the door for your commute.

The Illinois Tollway has looped 15 traffic feeds into its Web site so you can see conditions on the main arteries around Chicago before you get on the road.

According to the Illinois Tollway website, feeds from 15 traffic camera locations, including two on Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355), are now accessible to the public through the Tollway's homepage.

A bird's eye view of traffic conditions features three feeds on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), eight on the Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294), and two on the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88).

The camera feeds are accessed by selecting the View Traffic Cameras link on the Tollway’s homepage.

According to a release on the new system, the "clickable map allows customers to zoom in on a section of the Illinois Tollway system and select a camera icon to get a view from that location. …Customers can click on the 'Traffic Cameras' tab located in the left navigation bar to identify camera locations."

Images are uploaded about every five minutes and the view is dependent on weather conditions, Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur said in the release.
