Three New Cases of Emerald Ash Borer Confirmed on City's Northwest Side

Officials are checking ash trees near the new cases discovered in Kylyn's Ridge subdivision, Public Works Director Eric Dhuse said.

Officials are inspecting parkway trees around Kylyn’s Ridge subdivision after three trees there were infested with emerald ash borer, Yorkville Public Works Director Eric Dhuse said.

City officials recently confirmed the three new cases and are working with the Illinois Department of Agriculture check for more, Dhuse said. The subdivision is northwest of Route 34 and Cannonball Trail, near Kendall Marketplace.

“We had some last year, and some now this year,” Dhuse said. “It’s just a progression we’re going to go through.”

Emerald ash borer is a type of Asian beetle whose larvae eat the inner bark of ash trees, interrupting the tree’s ability to transport nurtrients, according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture's website.

Infested parkway trees will be removed, but the city may cover part of the cost of replacing the trees, Dhuse said in a news release. For information on the 50/50 replacement program, reidents should see the city website here.
