Oswego, Yorkville, Plano Mayors Recognize Volunteers

Oswego, Village President Brian LeClerq, Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski and Plano Mayor Robert Hausler recently joined more than 1,760 mayors across the country for the second annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service, a nationwide bipartisan effort that highlights the impact of national service in tackling city problems.

Golinski and Hausler participated in delivering meals to local seniors through Community Nutrition Network’s Meals on Wheels Program in Yorkville and Plano, while LeClercq served meals to seniors at the Oswego Senior Center.  

All three made an official proclamation naming April 1, 2014 as Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service.

Given the many social needs facing communities – and the fiscal constraints facing government at all levels - mayors are increasingly turning to national service as a cost-effective strategy to meet city needs.  

Nearly 200 RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) volunteers serve in Kendall County, providing vital support by serving at food pantries, providing essential transportation for seniors to the doctor, pharmacy, or grocery, delivering meals to the most disabled and frail seniors in Kendall County, serving meals at one of several congregate meal sites, visiting isolated and lonely seniors through Senior Services Associates Senior Companion program and much more.

In 2013, 194 RSVP of Kendall County volunteers served at 16 different local organizations, provided 27,295.5 hours of volunteer service valued at $632,983 back to the community (indepentdentsector.org).

The Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is a nationwide bipartisan effort to recognize the positive impact of national service in cities, to thank those who serve, and to encourage citizens to give back to their communities.
