Independent Coroner Candidate Reaches Signature Goal

Oswego firefighter Mike Dabney is going to keep collecting signatures until Monday's filing deadline in hopes of having more than enough to run against long-time Republican coroner Ken Toftoy.

The Oswego firefighter running against long-time Ken Toftoy has received enough signatures a week before the deadline to file his nominating petition as an independent.

Mike Dabney, of Oswego, had 2,049 signatures Monday morning, while his campaign workers estimated he needed between 1,518 and 2,428 , according to a news release Dabney issued Monday evening.

The number of signatures on his nominating petition needs to be equal to at least 5 percent of the people who voted in the last general election, Dabney said.

“The 2,049 number puts me comfortably above the minimum needed,” Dabney said in the news release. “I am very grateful to everyone who signed my petitions to give me a chance to be on the ballot in November. People have been very receptive to the idea of having a coroner who will work full-time for the salary being paid, and who promises to bring professionalism to the office.”

Dabney, who unsuccessfully ran against Toftoy in the 2008 Republican primary, to run as an independent last month. Toftoy, who also is chairman of the Kendall County Republican Central Committee, has served as coroner since 1992, according to his profile on the county’s website.

Dabney said area residents have been "very positive" as he walked door-to-door.

“I’m looking forward to debating my opponent, and giving everyone in Kendall County a choice in November," he said.

Dabney served as a deputy coroner from 2002 to 2008. He also worked for the Aurora Police Department for 27 years, the last 13 as a crime scene investigator.

He presently is a full-time firefighter/paramedic/investigator for the Oswego Fire Protection District, a crime scene instructor for the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at the College of DuPage, and an instructor for a fire investigator module at the College of DuPage.

If elected, Dabney has said he would quit his job at the fire protection district to focus on the coroner's office full-time.

Meanwhile, Toftoy has said the coroner's office was a part-time position run out of a funeral home operated by the elected coroner before Toftoy was elected 20 years ago. He created the physical office space and saved the county $50,000 in 1996 by having a hospital donate equipment for the morgue, he said.

He also makes anti-drunk-driving presentations to high-schoolers, visits forensic classes and gives tours of the morgue to criminal justice students. Toftoy said Dabney didn't handle many calls as a deputy coroner, but Toftoy has remained available to respond to situations around the clock.

Mr. Toftoy, the question is not what you done for us taxpayers in 1996, the question now is what have you done to us taxpayers lately. Click and go to 5-3-2012 Record/Sentinel Editorial, http://ledgersentinel.com/article.asp?a=10378

Toftoy is a prime example of the arrogance and ignorance of many of the county's long-term elected officials. So many of them are a total embarrassment to Kendall County and make us appear pathetically backward.

@ Jane prominently Republican run Kendall County( or any other one for that matter) is in fact pathetically backwards, and always will be as long has they run the ship.

let the auditor check his books also not the county board or purcell

Well, I've been informed that Mr. Dabney has filed his petitions with the County Clerk. He had over 2300 signatures. Let's see who asks for a copy of them, and see if they dare to challenge the petitions. So far, the differerence that I can discern between the two candidates is that Mr. Dabney now has a stake in getting elected, while Mr. Toftoy has a "steak" in getting re-elected. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I am a citizen who signed Mr. Dabney's petition in hope of getting him on the ballot. I believe it is time for a change in the Kendall County Coroner's position. Mr Toftoy has held this position since 1992. Twenty years is a long time for a public servant to hold office. Especially after having to continually read about the ongoing riff between the current coroner and the Kendall County Board about his salary. I believe he also is provided a fairly nice vehicle to drive, all at the taxpayers expense. I believe the county would be better served by an individual (Mr. Dabney), who would be content with the current salary, as well as bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience from his past jobs.

Is Mr. Toftoy running that scared already? From what I hear, 2 people have requested Mr. Dabney's petitions from the County Clerk. I've heard of 1 set being requested, but 2? By his own admission, Henry County's "self-touted" political consultant, Jon Zahm has said that he is examining Mr. Dabney's petitions, as I type. My prediction, no chance of getting Mr. Dabney off the ballot. Mr. Dabney 1, Toftoy/Zahm 0.

Since Mr. Youhanaie wants to name names, let's look at his record of backing candidates in Kendall County. Milliron-multi time loser under different parties. Vickery- disgraced and defeated at the polls in March. Indy for Sheriff in 2010- routed. Create the Auditor position to get his young friend a job? Trounced at the polls. His own precinct committeeman race as judged by his own neighbors? Handily defeated by Lee Hoffer. Dabney needed 1577 and did not turn in anywhere near the 2 x number usually needed. But this campaign will not be run in the comments section of an Internet site. At least by me.

Nice elephant dust there Jon. On further review, I supported Randy Hultgren, in the primary, against Ethan Hastert. Everybody said Hastert was going to win. Oops! Milliron does not live in my County Board District, where I actively campaigned for Koukol, Gryder, Cullick, and Swanson. 4 out of 5 ani't bad. As for the Sheriff's race, even the Sheriff took the right action in convincing his Chief Deputy to resign before the election; afterwards he appointed a very fine man in Mr. Koster, as a replacement. Sometimes, you get what you want in other ways. As for the precinct committeman's race, win some lose some; Reagan was judged by his peers in 1976 and lost. There's alway next time. Finally, I thought that we did need an Auditor. After the primaries, Mr. Toftoy's bragging about how he loves to eat filet mignon on the taxpayer's dime didn't sit to well with me. Along with the news that Mr. Toftoy paid Jackie Purcell (wife of County Board Chairman John Purcell) for over 4 months of pay for no work, I think that there are many voters who now regret their vote to eliminate the Auditor's Office.

I agree with you on Hultgren. Nobody did more than me to recruit and help Hultgren over Hastert, including leading him to victory in Henry County, the only County he won besides his home base of DuPage and Kane. You are bordering on defamation of character on Mrs. Purcell as she is a salaried employee and does not perform "no work" for pay. That would be illegal and accusing someone of a crime they did not commit rises to defamation. I'm not really looking for a fight with you as we agree on more than we disagree on. But I had to defend myself against your initial attack.

Mr. Zahm, For someone that lives in Osco, IL., some distance from Kendall County, you are quite informed and appear to be someone who is and has been quite active in our local affairs of gov. Could it be because YOU ARE BEING PAID BY THE POWERS THAT BE in the past primary and currently now. Should I venture to say your employers, the GOOD OLE BOY NETWORK has hired you to perpetuate the status quo. You are NO “David”, http://www.thegoliathslayer.com/political_consulting.html just a paid political assassin, a hired gun to the highest bidder and I guess your current employer is now Kenny Toftoy. I know what is to carry the mantle of David; it takes desire, passion, a strong heart, and a low buck sling. In 2006, we had a Goliath challenge; it was called Fox Moraine LLC, another well-conceived scheme by local city government officials. That experience open my eyes and I will not rest. I was raised to always try and try I will, until us, taxpayers are no longer saddled with the "Corruption Tax" http://www.suntimes.com/13400816-761/study-suburban-corruption-merits-creation-of-inspector-general.html that is put upon our backs by arrogant local government officials, it is our money, not Kenny Toftoy’s money (5-3-2012 Record/Ledger Sentinel Editorial) http://ledgersentinel.com/article.asp?a=10378 and he is accountable for his actions http://yorkville.patch.com/blog_posts/does-kendall-coroner-ken-toftoy-need-a-raise-and-should-i-vote-for-him and to us on Nov. 6, 2012.

Ken Toftoy has done more for the coroner position than most coroners in this state. He has modernized the office and done so by having much equipment donated, not to mention he is one of the most respected coroners for his knowledge in the state. I am sure you will correct me if I am wrong, but my understanding is that Toftoy actually could have just claimed per diems for his meals and wouldnt have had to provided receipts for anything. Instead he provides receipts in an effort to promote transparency and you villify him. Do you ask what other elected officials do with their per diems? Youre trying to create an issue for your candidate without there being one. Mr. Youhanie, you too are villifying Mr Toftoy for eating steak (that he could have claimed a per diem for and cost the tax payer more money, but what do you say about the County Board member you supported and his allegedly numerous per diems?

"Well, I have a filet mignon almost every Friday or Saturday night at Lakeview (restaurant in Yorkville) or Ralph's Place (in Bristol). Why should I change my eating habits?" - Ken Toftoy as quoted by the Oswego Ledger-Sentinel 5/3/2012
Stephen Youhanaie June 28, 2012 at 02:07 PM
Oh, where do I start...Minooka Mom, Mr. Zahm was trying to associate me with candidates that I had supported, and lost. I was updating him on the candidates that I had supported, who won. It's less about who you support, but more about that you do go out, visit the neighbors, and try to get them to vote for your candidates, as long as your intentions are good. I will be doing this in the fall, and I will be apologizing to my neighbors for having asked them to support Mr. Koukol. You are right in that regard. As for Mr. Toftoy, my point was that he was "bragging" about the county taxpayers paying for his filet mignon. That doesn't sit well with me when a number of Kendall County residents have had major property tax increases, becuase the tax base has shrunk, due to forclosures.

Wow...so they backed some canidates that didn't win their elections. Was the ones who won the best choice? Mistakes can happen by voting in someone who doesn't do as we want them to do. The only options are to vote them out during the next elections. There have been plenty of people who have run for office to be defeated the first time, but won the second or third go around. A canidate need to have a passion and love for their beliefs and implement thos beliefs if ellected. I'm tired of all the political lies and deceptions by everyone. I personally think all this mud slinging is for the dogs. Just vote for who you believe in and may the best canidate win. If you win then please please do the right thing and do what's best for the community and not just for your own benefit. These times are too tough to take the crap anymore!!
