Car Crashes Through Post Office Window

No serious injuries were reported, and the postal box section was expected to reopen Friday.

No serious injuries were reported after an 88-year-old Yorkville area women drove a Chevrolet Malibu through the glass front of the on Thursday morning, Yorkville police said.

“She was pulling into one of the parking stalls in front of the building,” Yorkville Deputy Police Chief Don Schwartzkopf said. “She’s not sure what really happened, but she probably hit the gas instead of the brake.”

The car was turning left when it accelerated into the building at 601 E. Countryside Parkway. The car hit a handicap parking sign, broke the glass windows and struck a table inside the post office near the post office box section, Schwartzkopf said. The airbags inflated and the woman was taken by ambulance to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, but the police had no reports of anything but minor injuries.

“I think she was more shaken up than anything,” Schwartzkopf said.

No tickets were issued as of Thursday afternoon, and Schwartzkopf did not anticipate any would be.

No one was standing near the postal boxes when the accident happened.

“We got lucky that nobody was hurt, because that is a pretty busy post office,” Schwartzkopf said.

The accident happened about 10:50 a.m. By 3 p.m., crews were working to clear the damage and secure the building. Postal box customers were asked to pick up their mail at the mail counter throughout Thursday, but Kim Willman, the post office’s officer in charge, expected the area would be open to the public Friday.
