Yorkville Deputy Police Chief Posts Bond After Drug Theft Charges

David Delaney accused of taking a prescription painkiller from police department's unwanted medication program, Kendall County State's Attorney Eric Weis said.

A Yorkville deputy police chief posted $2,500 bond Saturday morning after being accused of stealing prescription painkillers from the police department's unwanted medication program Friday afternoon.

David Delaney, one of Yorkville’s two deputy chiefs, was put on paid administrative leave and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and theft of government property, Eric Weis said. Both charges are Class 4 felonies.

The charges stem from an incident Friday afternoon in which Delaney took hydrocodone from a program meant to safely dispose of residents’ unwanted and unused prescription medication, Weis said.

The Illinois State Police had been investigating Delaney for about a week, and no other police officers have been implicated, Weis said.

“It appears it was only him,” Weis said.

Weis said Delaney was among a “select few” who had access to drugs involved with the program, but there is no evidence he had sold or intended to sell hydrocodone. Weis said he believes Delaney took the drugs for personal use.

Kendall County Judge Robert Pilmer set the bail at $25,000, which requires $2,500 bond to be posted while the case is pending. Delaney also was required to turn over his firearm owner’s identification card and all his weapons, Weis said.

His next court date is July 6.

Delaney has worked for the Yorkville Police Department since 1999 and was promoted to deputy chief in July.
