Man Sentenced to Five Years for Fleeing from Police

Robert M. Votava, 33, fled in his vehicle and then later on foot to elude police following a minor traffic violation.

A Bartlett man was sentenced for fleeing and eluding officers from the Plano Police Department in a recent incident, said Kendall County State's Attorney Eric Weiss. 

Robert M. Votava, 33, of the 100 block of Rita Court, Bartlett, was senteced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer after pleading guilty. 

Plano Police attempted to stop Votava for a minor traffic violation, but after initially stopping his vehicle Votava then took off at a high rate of speed and ran several stop signs before almost striking another police car who was attempting to stop Votava.

Votava then bailed out of his car and ran on foot and eventually had be be tasered by officers after he refused to stop running, said Weiss.

Officers learned following the arrest that Votava was driving on a revoked license and had several oustanding warrants for his arrest.

"Votava’s action showed a complete disregard for the safety of anyone who was on the streets of Plano during this pursuit," said Weiss. "The work of the Plano Police Department should be commended for their quick action to stop Votava from injuring or killing innocent people because he chose to break the law."

Votava will be required to serve one year of mandaotry supervised release after he serves his prison sentence.
