Inquest into Death of Father and Son Scheduled for Dec. 13

Jurors will rule on cause of death of Joseph and Wyland Schmitt. Coroner still waiting for toxicology results.

County officials are still waiting for toxicology results from the death of a Yorkville father and son.

County Coroner Ken Toftoy said he is expecting the report to be delivered soon. An inquest is scheduled for Dec. 13 to examine the facts presented by police and the autopsy and toxicology reports. The six jurors will determine if the deaths of Joseph R. Schmitt and his four-year-old son Wyland will be ruled as accidental, a suicide, a homicide or a mix of more than one. An inquest is required any time there is an unexplained death, Toftoy said.

The toxicology screening was sent to a private laboratory in Pennsylvania.

On Oct. 24 Yorkville police discovered the two bodies in the garage of of home in the 300 block of Bertram Drive  after being called to the home for a well-being check. Schmitt was found on the floor of the garage and Wyland was found unrestrained in a chair. When authorities entered the garage the family vehicle was not running, but the keys were in the ignition and the gas tank was empty, leading investigators to believe the vehicle had been running.

Preliminary autopsy results for the two Schmitts revealed amounts of carbon monoxide in their systems. Although the toxin was found in their system after a Friday morning autopsy, Toftoy said he could not yet confirm whether the levels of the toxin were lethal.
