4 Injured in Accident at Route 71 and Van Emmon Road

State police said Tuesday afternoon that they expect to issue citations in connection with the accident, which happened before 2:47 p.m.

Four people suffered non-life-threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon when a vehicle headed east on Van Emmon Road "missed the stop sign" and collided with a vehicle on Route 71, police said.

Illinois State Police Sgt. R.A. Caves said state police responded to the intersection about 2:47 p.m., although other police agencies arrived earlier. He did not provide the names of those involved nor details on the types of vehicles, but he indicated that none were high school students.

“Citations will follow,” Caves said.

There is no traffic control signal for drivers on Route 71. Drivers for both vehicles, as well as two passengers in the vehicle traveling on Route 71 were injured, Caves said.

State police left the scene at 3:52 p.m., Caves said.

I have to say that that isone of the most awful intersections around.. and not any better since the "improvements" The striping is all wrong, on the Van Emmon side especially.. It is absolutely more dangerous snow then before.. Plus whoever the company was.. has left debris, garbage, and equipment all over the shoulder of those 4 corners.. Deplorable!!!!!!!!!!!!

They're not finished with the improvements. I talked with Joe Spika, an IDOT construction field engineer. The contractor still needs to install the mast arms and traffic signal for the intersection, resurfacing the intersection and painting the road marks and stripes. Weather permitting, work could start again in March and be finished at the end of May.

happy to see IDOT has put up a lighted sign about using "caution" in the intersection… also, they had people out there last week, restriping, sanding, and removing debris..
