Kevin Sings the News: 'The Ballad of Moose'

Patch's troubadour, Kevin Trudo, has been watching the Kendall County Animal Control debacle over the past week with sadness and disappointment. It all comes out in this week's song.

For the past week, Kendall County Patch readers have been following the story of , and the tragedy of errors that has surrounded him.

Moose, a dog prone to biting, at the Kendall County Animal Control Shelter on July 3, biting him in the face. Warden Christine Johnson promised that Moose would be euthanized, but instead, animal control staff , and adopted Moose out to a family in LaSalle County—where he bit again.

Moose was finally on Monday. In the midst of all the controversy, Johnson resigned, and the County Board has come under fire for the way things were handled.

Patch troubadour Kevin Trudo, our columnist with a guitar, has been watching all this with sadness, and his song this week, called “The Ballad of Moose,” makes his disappointment plain.

Lyrics are printed below for your convenience. For more on Kevin Trudo, check out his Facebook page.

The Ballad of Moose

They never claimed him from the vet after the first bite
While at the shelter they were saying he was half-blind
Then the wrong dog met an end and Moose was out to bite again
You think they'd take more care after he bit a child

I don't know if he was mean or if he was just going blind
But I guess it don't matter much anymore
Like a system always will, a system let him down
Just like they always have before
And the more I hang around
The more these systems let me down

It's not about the mailman or the first guy who got bit
It's hard to say it, but it's not about the kid
Or the folks in Somonauk who tried, or that other dog that died
It's that someone could have stopped this at some time
But no one did

I don't know if he was mean or if he was just going blind
But I guess it don't matter much anymore
Like systems always will, a system let us down
just like they always have before
And the more I hang around
The more that people let me down

Trudo is such a prize. This one's touching and sad and smart—an opinion piece with the emotion of poetry and sound ... something we couldn't dream about in print media. I have to agree with Edev—brilliant.

Kevin, what a wonderful way to react to this terrible situation. Thank you, what a wonderful way to spread the word.
