Dorothy Eileen Christian, age 92 of Newark, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012 at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. She was born on Aug. 17, 1920 in Franklin Grove, the daughter of Russell C. and Bertha (Boyd) Hughes, Sr.
Dorothy was united in marriage on June 19, 1943 in Helmar Lutheran Church in Newark, to Howard T. Christian and they were blessed with 69 happy years together. She was a school teacher for 22 years in the Lisbon and other area one room schools. Dorothy was a longtime member of the Helmar Lutheran Church and was very active in her work for the Lord. She was also a member of the Kendall County Retired Teachers Association. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Howard Christian of Newark; her children, Robert (Pamela) Christian, Mark (Bess) Christian and Beth (John) Talley, all of Newark; her grandchildren, Kristi (Todd) Rice of Senoia, Ga., Robin (David) Jameson of Walnut, Cheri (Jason) Amaru of Orleans, Mass., Eric (Kristine) Christian, Timothy (Jennifer) Christian, Emily (Peter) Slayton, Christian (Nicole) Talley, and Leslie (Brandon) Sullivan all of Newark,; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Nancy Christian of Yorkville; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell C. and Bertha Hughes, Sr.; her brother, Russell C. Hughes, Jr; and her sister, LaVon Johnson.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at the Helmar Lutheran Church, 11935 Lisbon Road in Newark. Interment will follow in the Helmar Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 9 a.m. until the Hour of Service on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at the Helmar Lutheran Church in Newark.
