Obituary: Althea Elizabeth Johnston

Althea Elizabeth Johnston, Feb. 19, 1919 - Jan. 14, 2013.

The following information provided by Larson-Nelson Funeral Home:

Althea E. Johnston, age 93 of Yorkville, died Jan. 14, 2013 at home with her family present. She was born in Aurora, Feb. 19, 1919, the daughter of Arthur C. and Amelia L. (Goehring) Hummel of Oswego.

She graduated from Oswego High School in 1937. On Feb. 10, 1951 she married Robert J. Johnston and they spent 62 happy years together. She served on the Election Boards of Oswego and Yorkville for over 60 years and was a member of the Yorkville Congregational United Church of Christ for over 55 years, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School. She was a champion trapshooter in her earlier years, winning the Womens Class Division at the Daily News Fresh Air Fund Shoot at Lincoln Park in Chicago in 1933 at the age of 14. She loved gardening, mowing lawn, driving tractors in the field in busy seasons, and spent many hours painting ornamental iron railings in Bob’s welding shop.

She is survived by her husband Bob and their three children, Bruce (Valerie) of Paw Paw, Phyllis (Frank) Yabsley of Yorkville and Mark (Cindy) of Bristol, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also her brother Merlin (Leota) Hummel of Montgomery and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Loa (Vernon) Ament, and her sister-in-law Marian (Glenn) Shoger. A special thank you to her caregiver, Dawn, and nurses Karri, Joy and Debbie for their excellent care for the last four months.

Private Graveside Services were held.

A Memorial Visitation will take place from 3-7 p.m. with refreshments being served from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at the Yorkville Congregational United Church of Christ. A Memorial Service will then conclude the Visitation at 7 p.m. at the Church in Yorkville.
