Push for the Path Effort Centers on 705

The anniversary of the fatal accident on Kennedy Road is a rallying point for a fund-raising effort to build a bike path there.

Lynn Dubajic didn’t request post office box 705 for Push for the Path; it’s what the post office had available.

Dubajic, who is executive director of the , helped start the non-profit to raise money for a bike path along the roadway where her dear friend was fatally injured. Darlene McCue was riding her bicycle with her daughter when Darlene McCue was struck by a vehicle on Kennedy Road. It happened on July 5, 2009 – a date you might write as 7-05.

McCue was more than Dubajic's neighbor: Her husband, Dan, died of cancer in 2005, about two years before Dubajic’s husband was diagnosed with cancer in April 2007 and about three years before Dubajic’s husband died in February 2008.

“We leaned on each other; we walked in the same shoes,” Dubajic said Tuesday . “And it’s shoes I wish none of you have to walk in. Having someone there for you, and then having that person taken away, was very difficult for me … With that in mind, I said I would take on this challenge.”

The numbers 705 are taking on another new meaning, too.

After to fund most of the $1.7 million path, Dubajic and other path supporters are pushing to find 100 people to raise $1,000 by July 5 – the third anniversary of McCue’s death.

If they are successful, they’ll have $100,000 toward their goal of $357,000. That $357,000 is the city’s 20 percent share of the project’s cost, which Push for the Path has promised to raise over six years.

The 2.72 miles of trail would run along Kennedy Road from Route 47 to Mill Road.

The organization also is hosting a kick-off meeting for those who want to learn more about getting involved. The open house will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Panera.
