On The Campaign Trail - Making A Positve Change

What is important to you in a candidate?

The primary election coming up March 20th is much more than just a primary.  In Kendall County, most of the winners of the Republican primary end up winning the seats they have run for in the fall general election.  That makes your votes in the primary election even more important.  You will likely be electing your representatives in this election.

As you think about the candidates, I’m sure you will try to choose candidates with integrity and high moral character.  But what defines these virtues?  It may be slightly different for everyone but I believe there are some basic concepts that are universally viewed as acceptable or unacceptable.

As for me, let me say a few things about my virtues.  I don’t feel it is appropriate to fail to pay my county taxes and then to collect a salary from a county position.  I don’t feel I should be re-appointed to a position that I was found to have vacated by moving out of the area.  I don’t feel I should be entrusted with managing the county's finances if I can’t manage my personal finances.  And I don’t believe that if I have admitted to an ethics violation that anyone should look the other way.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not perfect.  I know all of us are human.  I believe strongly in forgiveness.  But I also know that actions should have consequences.  And I believe public officials should be held to a higher standard.  It is a privilege to serve the public, not a right.

I believe strongly that the character of the candidates is important.  What kind of a person someone is, is important.  Please take the time to learn about the people in this election and then choose.  It’s the only way to make a positive change.
