Call to Action to Bring Non-Perishable Items to Help Fight Hunger

Northbrook, IL, October 14, 2013 – Hunger Resource Network
(HRN), an all-volunteer, local non-profit organization dedicated to the
alleviation of hunger, is sponsoring an upcoming Community Outreach Day on Saturday,
November 9th, from 7:00-10:00am in the parking lot of Sunset Foods, 1127 Church
Street, Northbrook, IL.  Please join us
as 80,000 pounds of chicken will be distributed to over sixty area food
pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens. Over 20,000 pounds of this total
will be distributed to 10 agencies in the Fox Valley area:  the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry, Marie
Wilkinson Food Pantry and Holy Angels Food Pantry in Aurora, the Batavia
Interfaith Food Pantry in Batavia, Salvation Army in St. Charles, Feeding
Greater Elgin, the Elgin Cooperative Ministry and Church of the Redeemer in
Elgin, the Kendall County Food Pantry in Yorkville and the Peoples’ Resource
Center in Wheaton.  Hunger Resource
Network is providing the chicken at no cost to the recipient agencies by purchasing
the chicken directly from Tyson Foods.

This Community Outreach Day follows two very successful, similar
events sponsored by Hunger Resource Network and others in 2012.  With the help of volunteers from the
community, including representatives from the Northbrook Fire Department, the
Northbrook Public Works Department, Kraft Foods, local churches and the
Northwestern University Athletic Department, HRN distributed over 140,000
pounds of chicken to Chicago-area food pantries and shelters.  This event is made possible in part by the
generosity of Sunset Foods in allowing HRN to use the store parking lot as the
distribution point.  Ron Bernardi, Sunset
Foods’ Director of Community Events and Bruce Gonzalez, Northbrook store
manager, are passionate about helping to alleviate hunger and participated in
last year’s Outreach Day.  “We are happy
to host the 2013 Community Outreach Day for Hunger Resource Network and assist
in helping those in need in our community,” said Gonzalez.

In addition to the chicken distribution on November 9th,
Hunger Resource Network is partnering with the Northfield Township Food Pantry
to collect non-perishable items for the food pantry to help fill the many needs
for the upcoming holiday season.  Those
who wish to help in our fight against hunger may bring any of the following
items to the Northbrook Sunset Foods parking lot before 10:00 am on November 9th:
pancake mix, syrup, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, oatmeal, baking items (flour,
sugar and mixes) and dry dinner mixes (e.g. Velveeta Shells & Cheese,
Hamburger Helper, etc.).

Hunger Resource Network will continue to sponsor these Community
Outreach Days throughout the upcoming year as funding permits.  This depends in large measure on the
generosity and financial support of the general public.  While the number of pounds of chicken seems
significant, this food distribution fills no more than a two week need in our local communities.

“We are thrilled to be able
to sponsor and hold this event again to help over 60 agencies in our area who
work tirelessly to serve those in need,” said Daniel Jariabka, President of
Hunger Resource Network. “We’re very grateful to Sunset Foods and Tyson Foods
for their assistance in making this day happen for those less fortunate than
ourselves.  We continue to seek the
public’s support to help us hold these events more frequently during 2014.  Join us on the morning of November 9th
at the Northbrook Sunset Foods. We hope to see you there!”
