Yorkville's Snow Plan 01-20-2012

“We are currently out on the streets, but not throwing salt. All salt would do right now is cause the snow to stick to it and make the roads more slippery.

We plan on working into the evening to make sure people make it home from work (at least 8pm, but more than likely 9pm). At that time the decision will be made to stay on and finish if it is predicted to stop soon or come back in the morning with the full crew to plow and salt everything."
Director of Public Works, Eric Dhuse

Events at Local Schools for Saturday Canceled

Posted 12:15 p.m.: School activities for Friday and park district activities held at District 115 school on Saturday have been canceled, District 115 Superintendent Scott Wakeley said.

But for now, school activities planned for Saturday are expected to happen. High school and middle school wrestlers, as well as the high school speech team and middle school cheerleaders, are planning to travel to events on Saturday, so as long as the hosts don't cancel the events, those teams will participate in the events, Wakeley said.

He didn't expect crews would have time to properly plow school parking lots and sidewalks so public events could be held in the buildings on Saturday.

Public Works Crews Prepared to Plow

Posted 11:50 p.m.: Conflicting weather reports have left Yorkville’s Public Works crews waiting to see what Mother Nature actually delivers. Public Works Director Eric Dhuse said he’s heard the snowfall may be 1 to 3 inches or up to 8 inches and may end late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

“All the trucks are loaded; all the plows are on,” Dhuse said. “We’re just waiting to see what it does.”

City crews are responsible for more than 100 miles of roadway and tackle primary roads first and cul-de-sacs and dead-ends last, Dhuse said. If the snowstorm lasts until 4 a.m., crews may plow through the evening commute, take a break, and start again when the snow stops falling, Dhuse said.

Some cancellations:

• 's PTO sponsored Family Movie Night has been postponed until next Friday night (Jan. 27) at 7 p.m., according to a post left on Yorkville Patch's Facebook page.

• Yorkville High School track and field will not have practice Friday or Saturday, according to the team's Facebook page. Practice will resume Monday.
