Shopping Local: Cobblestone Bakery and Bistro

A 30-day challenge to shop local takes her to Cobblestone Bakery and Bistro.

Downtown Yorkville has had a bit of added excitement lately.  Parking is hard to find.  The pounding of hammers fill the air.  And small children walk down the street tightly holding cookies.  The change?  , located at 101 W. Van Emmon in downtown Yorkville.

With an office just across the street, I must admit to being a regular there.  But with this bakery, being a “regular” doesn’t mean you get a favorite treat and order it every time you go in.  The amount of variety is absolutely astonishing.  While they carry the same types of baked goods every day, the variety seems to be constantly evolving.  For example, they always carry muffins.  On most days, you can grab a pistachio muffin (which are incredible by the way!).  And some days you find blueberry, other days chocolate, or cinnamon, and even butterscotch in the case next to them.  There are always a variety of donuts, cookies, cakes, bread puddings, etc. to enjoy.

And then of course there are the maple-bacon donuts.  People from all over Illinois and even nearby states have traveled to Yorkville to try the unique combination of a donut with maple icing and a slice of bacon right down the middle of it.  It’s fun to listen to people working their way up to trying it.  The idea of bacon on your donut is just so…… bizarre.  And yet, every person I’ve ever talked to who tried it had to admit they really liked it.  The maple-bacon donuts are available daily, and I’m certain is their best-selling item overall.

While the baked goods are fabulous, my favorite dishes at Cobblestone are the flatbreads.  They carry three different kinds, and the combination of the crunchy flatbread warmed and topped with apples and gouda cheese; or fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes; or chicken with a southwest sauce is amazing.  There is also a large variety of sandwiches available, on fresh baked breads and rolls.

The atmosphere is relaxed, with seating both at tables with traditional chairs and on couches.  I recently attended their first wine tasting, and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of wines available.  The  wine and cheese shop is but will be opening soon- I can’t wait!
