Chamber Presents Awards at Annual Meeting

Yorkville Area Chamber of Commerce's membership is strong and supportive, Executive Director Sherri Farley said.

members consistently value the good of the whole even in tough times, Executive Director Sherri Farley said Thursday at the chamber’s annual dinner meeting.

She pointed to the chamber's mentoring relationships, a robust scholarship program and active leads groups, among other things, as she kicked off an awards. About 160 people attended the dinner at .

“There are a lot of selfless acts I see here,” Farley said. “… I see that all the time in our chamber, and I think that is the heart of our chamber.”

Despite the poor economy, chamber membership has remained strong with about 315 businesses as members, Farley said. Within the last year, the chamber has hosted about 20 ribbon-cuttings, launched a new website and stabilized its office hours with two part-time employees celebrating their one-year anniversaries.

In the coming year, the chamber plans to add new elements to its events and revamp its young professionals network, Farley said.

Farley and chamber President Jocelyn Herren presented the following awards:

• Carrie Niesman of won “Ambassador of the Year” for going above and beyond in promoting the chamber and its programs.

• Kris Kearns of The Kearns Team won the “Chamber Spirit Award” for his outstanding efforts promoting chamber membership and member-to-member involvement.

• Maria Spaeth of the won the “Community Impact Award” for her work serving and enhancing the community.

• Bob Jungwirth of The Care of Trees won “Green Business of the Year” for his business’ sustainable efforts and green practices.

• Jeff Corirossi of won “New Member of the Year.”

• Ken Spaeth and won “Business of the Year” for the contributions to the chamber and community in general in leadership, donation and volunteering.

• Sandy and Chris deRidder received a special award recognizing their contribution to the chamber and the community as owners of CanAm Communications of Yorkville. They recently retired.

• Retiring chamber board members Bob Pilmer of Pilmer Law and Tom Engler of Yorkville Community Unit School District 115 also were recognized.
